Question Slingmedia Slingbox PRO HD

I had a moment of impulsiveness and bought one and it is due to be delivered on Weds 23rd
Has anyone got one?

I am wondering if I can put it upstairs and connect it to the multi-room sky cable (with magic-eye) rather than have it in the living room connected directly to the sky+ box?

One major consideration for this is that I can much more easily run a network cable from upstairs to the router downstairs (approx 10m). If I had to run a cable from the router around the house into the living room it would be 50+ metres and would involve a hell of a lot of battling with bushes etc.

The other consideration is that the living room setup is a mass of wires as it is and moving it around is very VERY hard work.

Anyone got any tips/advice??

Thanks

Mark

So - Judging by the underwhelming response, I assume that I am a trend setter for the scoobynet massive?

I'll post back once it's installed and running

Not much help but I've had a basic Slingbox for a couple of years, it is a great bit of kit but I can't comment on whether it's going to work with Magic Eye as I don't have one. Maybe one thing to consider is a powerline networking kit, will certainly save on cables and in my experience they work pretty well nowadays.

FWIW if you have a PC with a TV card near the Sky Box then this also works well especially for watching TV over the web http://www.orb.com This also seems to work quite nicely on a decent smartphone (at least it does on my Nokia E90 and N900) which I think is an extra cost option for a slingbox. Obviously you would really only want to do this if you have a handy wireless LAN to connect to.

The other advantage of this over my slingbox is that you can have more than one person watching the stream simultaneously (handy if you've got two soap opera addict daughters at Uni). An obvious disadvantage is the need to have a computer running to act as the server and it does need to be fairly powerful. I've got a very basic setup in that it simply shows what is on the Sky Box at the time but since my wife is also a soap opera addict it works OK for us.

Sorry if this hasn't helped much!

The slingbox will work with the aerial / magic eye although it is better to be connected in a different way (Scart / component / HDMI).

I would also recommend the homeplug networking as an easier solution.

+3 for home plug lan.

I run my (silimar) Divx HD player on one and it runs 1080p fine.

On wireless it was not the best TBH. Would stutter now and then or just die all together. (router some distance away though).

CAT 5 passed through wall via redundant analogue arial hole (resealed with gunk) passes around front of house into office directly into back of router.

nice one, I just use a nas icybox (forget the model not the buggy one) with 2gb hd, connected directly to 2 media pcs via ethernet (gb router netgear dgn3500) and then the other pcs wirelessely. No probs with full hd and sound either by wire or wireless (sorry not looked at what the slingbox does )
