Bought a new phone over the weekend on Orange PAYG.

I want a phone as a phone, not a camera/MP3 Player/Games Machine etc - just a phone.

So, wander into the Orange Shop and see a SamSung E1360B reduced to £14 - That'll Do Me!!

Had to buy £10 Airtime - that's OK (will last me about 6 months!).

Went up to the counter and asked for it - handed over my old phone so I could keep the same number and transfer the numbers and suchlike across.

The bloke got one, gave me a new SIM card - did some trickery and added £10 airtime on it, £1 was added because I took a new SIM card.

All going swimmingly ..... then he said, "That will be £14, please"

EH? I thought the phone was £14 if I buy £10 Airtime?

Paid my £14 ..... For Phone and £11 Airtime!!

It means the phone and charger cost me £3!!

£3!!??

How can that make any sense?

They want to sell you the phone so they can charge you per minute to use their network, its in their interest to make sure you have a cheap and easy way to do so, or a trendy new gadget to lock you into a 24 month contract.

 

But £10 lasts me at least 6 months ..... they don't make much from me!

I have an ancient Motorola on contract - it's as big as a housebrick!

 

I think you might be one of the people they dont count on wanting phones... However check how long your top up lasts, There is a chance it might need a new top up every so often as they credit might only last a month.

Maybe its the world making you feel better after the car going

 

They work on the fact that people tend to use them when they have them, they dont really give anything away, its a basic phone, probably end of line, possibly subsidised but they knock them out in their millions, many never get used.

I work for orange retail, and it sounds like he forgot to scan the top up voucher. He will get in trouble Unless of course you had 10 pounds in your phone fund, which is basically a fund that orange provide. For every £10 pounds credit you put on, orange place an additional £1 in a fund that can be used against the price of the phone, but that would mean you have topped up by £100 since march 2009 and judging by your expected future usage, i doubt that.


So looks like you have had a lucky outcome as the expense of the forgetful sales rep.


That, or he was just trying to get rid of you as quickly as possible

Still in use in my cars ..... still powered up, still on contract, still about 24p a year bill ....

 

Like you Pete, I have had my PAYG Ericsson for a good few years now and the top up seems to last at least as long as yours. All I use it for is if I need to make an emergency call if the car breaks down or something.

Can't be bothered to keep taliking to others on the phone when I am not in the house and it won't take pictures or play tunes thank goodness.

...so that is ninety-nine pounds (back in nineteen ninety six) plus fourteen years at a supposed (i.e. fantasy) thirty-five pence per month (or nearly sixty extra quids) plus the cost of your two extra batteries that are allegedly working "perfectly" after those fourteen years - which i calculate to be considerably more than three pounds!!!.

It is four years on, and you still can't admit to talking absolute bollocks!!

We had a cracking deal a couple of years ago with one of these online places.

12 month contract
a posh phone
a free phone
3 spare phone sims
I had a PS3 with my bundle wife had a Wii and Wii Fit
We both got £40 odd off and I got another £20 odd for introducing the wife
I can't remember what the texts and calls were but it wasn't massive but I make a dozen calls and texts a month so no bother to me.
Our payments were about £30 a month

I just saw it as paying for the PS3 on the drip. Flogged the phone for about £170 plus the £60 so the PS3 cost me about £130 and I got free calls for a year.

I just use the free phone which I think is similar to the one Pete mentions. I have never done the mobile phone thing.

 

e2save had the Nokia 1661 for 99p at the weekend. That's cheap!
