Default Any techies in the house into AV stuff?

I'm not having the best of weeks when it comes to tech.

1/2 of memorys failed (ok it happens, but it was kingston ram). Thats a pisher, but last night my mk 1 xbox running xbmc I use for play avi files has stopped taking inputs from the 2 controllers, and my elite wont play them, and neither will media player on windows.

Has anyone any ideas what I can replace with the mk1 xbox with thats cheap and will do the role? I dont want to touch the elite knowing how fickkle they can be.

The mk1 cost me 35 quid 3 years ago so I've had my moneys worth. Iyt still works too, just wont take any input!

my old xbox had a pimped version of XBMC on it and was brilliant at streaming the avi files i had for tv series and adult educational material. sadly the stalwart performance fell over with the introduction of .mp4, .mkv and bluray rips. the poor old XBOX just ran out of puff and could not do any 720 of 1080 stuff.

I decided to invest in an AC Ryan Play on HD. a media streaming box that i am happy to say has handled all this stuff in its stride. Provided to dont have too much running serverside it will happily stream 1080 stuff across the network. alternatively you can transfer to an on board hard disk and play it from there.

Might be a bit too rich for you but i think they can be had for around £100 odd now.

Might have to do that route. Ideally I'd like Hdd based if I can get it. I dont always have the macs on.

TV has HDMi, DVI and composite inputs.

look at popcorn hour as well. with 2TB drives under £100 now anyone of these devices will do your job for you. one of my better purchases i have to say.

with the AC ryan you can upgrade the firmware. while the interface is no where as slick as XBMC it is functional and has some nice touches over the last few month. it now has "just another jukebox" that will take all the stuff from the harddisk and catalogue it.
