Default approx cost for central heating a flat?

On behalf of my neice who has just bought a flat. It has no CH at present, ie no gas either. The cost to have a gas connection installed will be separate and done by BG.

Its a three bed flat. So say 7 rads? In London. Hardware ie boiler, rads and pipework I estimate at £2k. What should the labour be?

Thanks.

£1500 labour
£1000 boiler/trvs/room stat/pipe + fittings.
£350 rads

That's what I would expect to pay. I'm assuming that all pipes will be surface run.

BTW are you sure it will be British Gas doing the main gas supply, I had one done recently and it was National Grid, then BG came and put the meter on afterwards. Cost was around £240.

Thanks.

No reason why the pipes can't be surface run, its a ftb type flat so that should be acceptable when she comes to resell.

BG said they would like to give a quote (they were called about sorting out the gas connection). It was £7500!!

What floor is the flat on, mine is ground so maybe easier there, As long as you gain permission and dig your own trench for from the site of the meter to the pavement area then it was around £240 standard charge. To have them dig the trench which took me half a day would have come to around £700.

All the lifting of public land i.e pavement areas are included in that price.

Thanks mate. I think its third floor. I'm giving my niece some general advice but am not about to start digging trenches (wouldn't do it for myself either)
Her dad might do it I suppose.

BG annoy the hell out of me.
We enquired abut getting gas, as living in the sticks it's either Oil or Leccy. Both very expensive to run.
As there are only 4 houses dotted about, they said it wasn't worth their while to supply us.

I saw an interesting breakdown on I think the MSE forums that suggested some flats could be cheaper to have electric heating as the installation and maintenance of a gas system made up the difference in the price of low maintenance electric heating.
