Lightbulb £950, to £850, to £600, to £370, in under 2 hours

We've been thinking of getting a new bed, and so popped into a major bed retailer this aft after having a Costly Coffee. Fell in love with the feel of a Sleepeezee 2000 pocket sprung mattress at £950, which they immediately discounted to £850. Me being me I convinced the misuse that the overheads these places have (albeit offset by their buying power) mean we could probably get the same mattress cheaper at a ramshackle old mill bed place near where we live.

So, 10 minutes later we're offered the same bed for £600. The misuse is immediately filled with glee and wants to order it there and then. Not so fast my dear !

Nipped home and another 10 minutes of browsing sees me ready to order the same mattress with free delivery for £370 (with Quidco cashback) £580 saved in under 2 hours

Its all well and good doing that but these stores are there for you to try and as you say as a result have overheads. If everyone did that the stores would go out of business and then how would you know that was the mattress for you?

Good saving tho

I'll let those not prepared to do a couple of hours research pay for the aircraft hanger retail outlet, and there's plenty with more money than sense out there.

Why, mine was double that. You spend much of your life there.

We tried several of the cheapo ones with half a dozen springs and they were awful. With my weight we found none of them comfortable until we got over the 1400 spring mark, and pocket spring preventing her rolling into my hollow. The price has to go up the more engineering involved, but as I found, it doesn't need to go up as much as they want it to. Hell, I even saw some VI Spring mattresses in Barker & Stonehouse for £6.5k and they were very plush, but even their 'firm' was like a soft fluffy cloud which would give me backache after one night. I've had £90 Argos specials in the past, and I'm afraid my sleep and back are worth more than that. When you consider it's what is going to keep me warm, comfortable and pain-free for about ten years, even £90 a year, or less than £2 a week is a small price to pay. However, £37 a year is even better

Hehe, you have been the victim of your lady friend coming back after buying too many shoes. They always are fast to point out how much they have "saved". You didn't save £580, you SPENT £370 and got a great deal

You sure it was not just a sales tactic?

The sales tactic is the big retail park store rebranding a £400 mattress with a different label and trebling the price, then offering a meagre discount to entice the stupid. The mattress I want is listed on the big stores website at £1150, discounted to £950, with the store offering a further drop to £850. Same product, different label, is between £385 and £410 online, with the £410 price actually being the better option as it has free delivery and 10% Quidco making it £370 all-in.

They may have tried a sales tactic, but I have effectively used a 'buyers tactic' !!!

Was the main retailer Dreams by any chance?

Don't forget its the last few days of their sale (the "last few days" sale advert has been going on for well over two months now )

Much like ALL the furniture retailers, do their sales EVER end ???? At some point, some advertising genius is going to realise that the general public have become aware that there isn't actually a sale on at all, just a constant marketing ploy with no real bargains. Why can't they just start being honest and have a proper price, and an occasional REAL sale ? Let's face it, nobody rushes out to buy these items just because there's a sale on, you only buy furniture when you NEED it ! It all seems so futile !

I ask because I need a new one soon!

Agree that a bed is not something to scrimp on. A cheap bed leaves you with a bad back. Cheap shoes just leaves you sleeping in your cheap bed alone.

The first thing I notice in someone is their shoes and their teeth. If the shoes are cheap and the teeth are manky, then that person obviously doesn't take care or pride in their health or appearance.
