Thumbs down Why of why do HMRC keep getting things wrong. Mums pension...

I've just had to speak to HMRC this afternoon, for my Mum. She is 75 and bright as a button but not very good with tax etc.

She has her state pension and 3 other very small pensions. The whole lot comes to about 12k a year, half of that being the state pension.

The other 3 have been taxing her at BR.

Now I have no idea how these pensions work, but her allowances are 9600 pa.

To me, that leaves about 2370 taxable.
Last year she paid nearly 1400 in tax.

HMRC admit there is something wrong and are going to look into it. I have to phone them again in (wait for it) June or July!!!!!!! as it will take them that long to get the P60's in.

Any experts about who can give me some hints on how to get some money back for Mum and how to push things on for her, a bit quicker. TIA

She should only be paying £488 or so, over payments will be refunded to her.

Check this site out, very good.

Yeah my wife has an NHS pension and her tax code has suddenly decreased. When I phoned the agency who make the payment the answerphone message said Revenue had cocked things up. They hope to resolve by end of May.

It wouldn't do any harm for you/mum to write to Revenue as that may move her up the queue.

Pbobably left the correct info in back of a cab!

This is the reason

HMRC's desire to make efficiency savings at all costs leads inevitably to problems like this. This is before the inevitable worsening of services caused by massive public sector cost-cutting that all the major political parties have promised to engage in. Things can only get worse!

People might like to think about that when they call for cutting out "bureaucratic waste"...

Meh they are a bunch of incompetants; For every ten people you speak to on the phone you may be lucky enough to find one who a) knows what they are talking about and b) are correct in what they say.

I've only just managed to get the correct tax code myself; only took five attempts!

Looks like a gross inability to cope with the job.
