Solar Charger For iPhone??
Going on my hols soon, and knowing how much I use my iPhone for music/games etc my battery lasts a day max. The problem is, I'm running 3.1.2 with a Jailbreak which is tethered, meaning if I let the iPhone battery die, I cant switch it back on without being hooked up to a laptop, and I don't want to take a laptop with me just for that. Seen a few solar chargers (most with built in Li-ion Batteries), but has anyone actually used one and do they work well, or a waste of time. Knowing the limiting capabilities of small solar panels I'm not convinced they will be much use......... Anyone?

we bought a power monkey a while back. it took 5 hours to half charge a Nintendo DS - we were in Asia at the time, so there wasn't a lack of frakkin hot direct sun
don't trust these solar chargers.

There are some sellers on eBay that do high capacity batteries for mobile phones. Would one of those help?
If I'm going to a festival or something I usually get a couple of spare batteries for my phone from eBay and charge them up before I go. The Chinese copies are usually only a few £. Well worth it.

You should click the link before you open your mouth, that's a Power Monkey Powertraveller, you wasted your money on a Power Monkey Solar charger. Mine is a life saver, will charge hundreds of devices and I paid ten pounds more than my link.

I know that these things are never really completely off and you can usually swap a battery without losing all the settings
Also the battery never gets completely flat, the phone should shut down when the pre-determined cut-off voltage of the Li-Po battery has been reached. Over discharge damages them, but it will still be giving a little power, enough to keep say some memory in a low power data retention mode.

Later phones on unofficial networks need a program running all the time, when the phone shuts down this program shuts down and you lose your hack. It's pretty simple to get it back running, but you need a laptop.

ScoobyDoo555 - There is no 'untethered Jailbreak' available yet for the 3.1.2 firmware. There are various videos on youtube showing it, and geohot has confirmed he has it working, but no release (or release date). I'm assuming he's waiting for iPhone OS 4.0 to be released.
CoffinDodger - I don't plan to turn it off to fly, just put it into 'flight mode' which kills all cellular activity.
Thanks for all the replies, a spare power supply such as the powermonkey looks the ideal solution!

Some airlines have a policy that all electronic gadgets are turned off during take off and landing, including phones regardless of being set to flight mode or not. Definitely been informed of that on several flights.

Not an issue any longer as the new unteathered jail break has been released.
Problem sorted.
As for you guys you get as bitchy over gadgets as women do over the sales rack in Bank!
