Default Number plate transfers

Is it possible to transfer a number plate which is currently on retention onto a newly bought car when i only have the new buyers slip and not the full log book?
Thanks
Nik.

Easiest way is to go to the nearest DVLA office, they can do it on the spot when you have all the paperwork.

Not true.
Went in yesterday with new buyers slip (from log book) and filled in a V62 and bingo! Plates transfered to new car.
