The Great Petrol Heist
Here we go again, oil prices down but petrol up to record highs. At least Dick Turpin wore a mask when he robbed road users
BBC News - Petrol prices set for record high, says AA

Lindsay Hoyle, Labour MP on the Commons business committee, told the Daily Telegraph: "Crude oil has gone up this year, but nothing like the rise in petrol prices. Motorists are being legally mugged at the forecourt by petrol companies."

The catch 22 here is that the cost of fuel is seriously going to hamper our chances of recovering economically which in turn will keep the pound low on the money markets which contributes to some of the reason petrol prices are so high and so on...
The government need to postpone or cancel the forthcoming duty increase (which as it is in the name of 'green issues' and not revenue generation they can do as the prices are aleady so high that people are thinking carefully about their use of fuel) and lobby the oil companies to get the price back down. They all made record profits last year so there is room for manouvre even using things like the exchange rate as an excuse.
What I am completely confused about however is why David Cameron is letting the fuel price issue slip by. If ever there was a vote winner this is it and yet he has utterly failed to even mention it let alone pedge to investiagte, lobby or whatever. I can therefore only assume that like Brown he is quite happy to see the country crippled and held to ransom by the oil companies and the associated taxation of fuel.

Already did and it ain't there on the BBC or anywhere else. In fact Cameron doesn't seem to have talked about petrol prices at all since the middle of last year from wat I can see.
More blind faith in the opposition methinks. Unless you can post us all a link of course.

Looking forward to the extra 3p/litre tax due to be added in April
Thanks Brown!
Problem is the country is basically bankrupt, so they've got to get some money from somewhere. What gets me is how so much tax money is wasted - this country is still a free-for-all for anyone wanting to come and live on benefits and use NHS etc for free. THat just has to stop, and would save billions and billions.

Weak currency coupled with a weak government equals higher and higher prices.
We need some more blockades and go slows - our country really isn't too far behind those struggling EU countries except our government can hide it better because we are not part of the Euro.
Still I'm looking for to payday because I can pay to have my Jeep converted to LPG - 57p. Cost is £1200 and should take about 3 years to pay me back. Can't see me ever selling my Jeep so its worth it.
PS - No new government is going to stop taking money from fuel. We either make a stand, choose alternative fuel or hand round the lube.

It's partly the exchange rate, partly a bit of extra fuel duty and VAT and in no small way down to the oil companies seeing what they can get away with.
alcazar is right about the psychological barrier of £1 per litre

There must be a level at which people will stop using their cars all together or perhaps walk rather than car it somewhere? We could always use the subsidised yet fantastic public transport
