water pipes baning in the middle of the night but nothings on
hello, i would like some info.
i was awake at 3am this morning, and without any taps or loo or shower on or anthing we heard that bang that you hear, when you turn a mixer tap off suddenly,
the heating was not on the house was warm there are no leaks, the only thing i can think of is that i topped the boiler up a little bit with that tap thats underneath when the pressure a little low, but this is only done eveet few months, and then just for a second whilst the needle moves up.
the heating comes off at 9.30 and on again before seven, i dont think it was general expansion it just sounded like the bang you get when you turn the tap off quickly, any ideas anyone,
i think next doors boiler is in their kitchen so im not sure its theirs, although they did used to have a shower in their bedroom along time ago, but this has been taken away
mine is a vokera excel 80sp, about 10 years old, the house is maintained in good condition.

Just going on what happened with our system that we've just replaced. Previously a condensing boiler (in the garage) running both the heating and hot water tanks. This had a thermostat on some exposed pipework attached to a water pump which circulated the water if the temperature dropped below a threshold. We've replaced it with no tanks and a combi boiler (everything mains fed) which has a similar frost protection system built in - the boiler doesn't fire but the pump circulates the water in the radiatiors when the temperature drops too low. For all intenets, both sounded like the heating was on with water running through the rads but with the boiler not firing.
Sounds like you need a forensic plumber

Thats a good point of Paul's, its surprising what a bit of air in the pipes can do.
We have an elderly combo which is only just removed from the old fashioned Ascot heaters. It still works well but is on LPG and sometimes does not light up first time. The gas builds up in the heat exchanger until it lights up with a massive bang! Just the thing during an early morning shave!!!
We are used to it now, been happening for about 15 years, but it sorts out the visitors!

My water pipes sometimes give a "chirp" like i hear when my washing machine is running but it isn't (if you see what i mean) which suggests another washing machine could be the cause!
