Mobile Phone Handsets
It's the time again where I'm looking to upgrade my phone and take out a new contract.
I've done a bit of poking around and the Nokia 5800 seems to have the features that I want and is size and proportion I like. However, there are sooooo many other phones that I don't know what the equivalent models from other manufacturers are (for comparison purposes). I also don't know if the 5800 has been superseded or is due to be.
Can someone bring me up to speed with mobiles and which other models I should consider. Basically, if the 5800 is a BMW M3, I want you to tell me what the RS4 is, the AMG, the Caddy CTSV and so on

Blackburry's are too wide for my tastes and I don't think I need the functionality of a physical qwerty keyboard. I don't send many texts and I'd only use the phone for a little bit of browing/emailing when I was really stuck.

The newer Bold is a lot thinner than the old one.
HTC Hero can be a simple phone, or a computer geeks dream. similar to the iPhone but a bit different, and more customizable.

FWIW, there are too many bloody mobiles!! Each manufacturer should make 4 at most and immediately discontinue a model when they bring out a new version! When you walk into a store it's like walking into a VW dealership to find they have the MK4,3 and 2 golfs available for sale new!

lol and back to a Blackberry fan haha
They aint for everyone, and by the sounds of it your usage is low anyway.
Nokia N86 good spec
Have a look on GSM Arena and do an advanced search of what you want/need from it.
Touchscreen or physical keyboard?
2G or 3G ?
Big screen?
Good camera?
And so on.
BB's are very handy to have, but not everyones cuppa. iPhone is a great tool to carry, especially if you are friends with touchscreens.

Is the 5800 XpressMusic old news and due for replacement? On the basis that it'll be a 24 month contract I feel I should get a relatively 'current' model. A few sites seemed to have discontinued the 5800, suggesting it has or is about to be replaced?

5800 is indeed outgoing I believe mate.
The man speaks sense, N900 is nice. But maybe overcomplex for what you want.
I have to say the 5800 was a nice phone, its the only touchscreen I have actually owned, but also the only one I could get on with. Touchscreen annoyed me still though lol. Would rather have an N97/N900

Gravitating towards the N97 mini now. Anyone got much experience of these?
I really don't know what to do about the whole internet thing. Obviously if I'm in a mates house I can tap into their wireless for free (i assume?). The problem is that I work from home and, tbh, don't spent much time out and about or away from an environment with free wifi. It therefore seems a little pointless to have a fancy phone who's functionality is largely about it's net access. That said, I do desire the ability to be connected when I do venture out. However, this probably wouldn't be often enough to justify an unlimited internet package. On the other hand, I fear that if I was with O2's £1 a day capped system I'd find a way to end up browsing enough days of the month using their system to bump my bill up £10 or so.
This is a classic don't need, but want, but can't really justify scenario.

lol ok from my perspective... JUST mine, not trying to convert you lol.
I bought a Blackberry because I fancied a change. Saw them becoming more and more mainstream and thought I would try one.
Given the number of "smartphones" I have had in the past and NEVER used beyond calls and SMS, with the occasional MMS, I was convinced it was a passing fad for me.
However, once you are aware of what you can do on the move, the convinience factor, the "I wonder, oh I know I will check" moments seem to pile up. Given its ease of use and friendliness I have found I spend hardly any time on the home PC anymore, as all my mail and essential browsing can be done on it.
Result is more free time, less time sitting pointlessly on the net, and a lot more freedom.
Give that my new one was £20 a month INC unlimited net with 3-400 mins and texts, its perfect for everything I need.
So when you say you would not use the net/data enough to justify the cost/handset. Never be too sure til you have tried it.
Im sure this is the same for iPhone users too. More freedom, and a whole new world.
I am not for one second saying get either device, but the friendlier they are to use, the more you will use it. And the more you are comfortable using it, the easier live can become.
Train timetables before you reach the station, weather reports, email on the move, market updates, streaming news on demand, chat applications, book tickets online, mobile internet banking, to name but a few. And now.. APPARENTLY, they are talking about being able to speak to other people, with your own voice, real time. Im not sure about it myself, all sounds a bit freakish, but google "telephone call" and its got the info there. Witchcraft I tell you!

PS N97 Mini, gets a lot of stick but is a very capable handset. Full of function, with the famous friendly Nokia interfaces.
Its a good half way smartphone for sure.
The original N97 has much more onboard storage though, keep that in mind. Compare them on GSM Arena if you can. Although not sure too many places still stocking the original now.

I listed all the criteria I needed in a phone then eliminated all the handsets that didn't fulfill the list. The only one that did everything that I wanted was the N97 and I have to say that I love it.
I use it like the mini pocket PC that it is and am always on the internet on it. The onboard storage is massive plus you can add more via a card. The camera and video are excellent and the full Qwerty is easy to use. The GPS works really well and I use it with ViewRanger (OS maps) and Google Maps, it's stopped me getting lost loads of times
It bounces quite well when you drop it too

Sloppy software, freezing and rebooting.
95%+ of people dont seem to have these issues, but it seems when you get them, they are a proper PITA
Personally I would say go for it. Sounds the ideal phone for you, and possibly a step to smartphone doom for you. (which aint a bad thing)

I was looking at this phone too , 'deal' wise or samsung jet...
Is video likely to be similar to my present viewty , which has divx
Another thing , do balckberries use t9 ??? ! , presumably you dont reallly have to type each individual letter - but then why du need the whole alpahabet
one thing about the nokia also - it doesnt look that strong , i couldnt see a single bit of metal employed in its make -up.... .still if you had a 2 year warrenty doesnt matter

Its much easier to type random stuff that makes no sense to T9, and I honestly prefer the freedom of it.
O2 are quite cunning with their BIS package on the Blackberry's. To get total use from the Berry you would need to pay £10 a month as the internet does NOT include PUSH email.
If you look at the Panther tariffs on Orange, they offer fully inclusive data (or they did)
