This will be obvious to a lot of people, ive recently bought a phone that has Garmin Sat Nav and GPS built into it.

Do you get charged by the provider for using either Sat Nav or GPS, while i`m here what other things apart from the internet are chargeable on these all singing and dancing mobile phones ? I`m on Vodafone.

yes if it uses the data connection to pull down maps and your internet tariff isn't free.

People used to download maps before travelling

HTC Touch HD (Windows Mobile), running TomTom that I obtained from somewhere

Cost = nothing.

The only way it would cost me is if I were to use the TomTom traffic update service as it gets these over you phones data connection. The only other thing is the GPS downloads data to speed up its fix, but it only does this after asking, and if I want to update it I'll use Wi-Fi or activesync it with the PC which updates it automatically.
