I see that if you live in Newquay but have to rush up to the Highlands to visit a sick Grannie the 1st Class return rail fare is now £1002

Newquay to Par and Inverness to Kyle don't even have first class accommodation
If anyone hasn't done the drive or train ride from Fort William to Kyle of Lochalsh - just do it. Has to be a contender for Best Drive in the UK.

Actually I've just checked and the trip is just over 1400 miles return by road. If my Passat only did 40mpg (and it gets top 40s on a run) and with diesel at 1.10 litre it would cost me £175 ....... oh and 12 hours each way but then how long would the train take, in days ...?
Apparently you can get an 'advance saver', or whatever, for £561 .....

If you book specific trains then you'll save an absolute fortune, and this way first class usually works out a lot cheaper than buying a standard return ticket, believe it or not.
And yes you do get coffee, and meals and beer

Just checked via 'thetrainline'.
Leave Newquay 06.57 (first train).
Arrive Kyle 11.28 - the next day .......
Stop overnight in Inverness. So over 28 hours. Same for the return.
So unless you sleep on the station overnight there's also the hotel/B&B to add into the equation.

Maybe. From Rail travel | £1,000 fair | Newquay to Kyle, Scotland | Western Morning News
"... And a return flight from the Westcountry to the Highlands – Exeter to Inverness – with Flybe is £372 while the National Express coach journey from Newquay to Inverness costs £124 return or less. Even a Westcountry taxi driver quoted the Western Morning News £200 less for the 1,700-mile round trip from Cornwall to Scotland than the ticket available from the CrossCountry train company ..."

The reality is that you arrive at the hospital 28 hours after you left, cold and bedraggled (and broke).
A friendly Doctor welcomes you and in broken English says "Ah, good morning Sir. You must have come to collect the body"
