Default Chicken pox....?

I have just come back from my holibobs later than i should as my daughter got chicken pox for the 3rd time and was unable to fly home until she was not infectious.

This is the 2nd time she has had it on holiday. The 1st time she got CP it went to her brain and made her very ill.

Luckily i was insured and am able to claim on the insurance but the insurers have told me that i have to mention her past CP history and it may be difficult to insure her again.

I cant find too much on the net about it and was wondering if this has happened to anyone elses children here. I know its not unknown to get it twice but three times is very unusual.

Any doctors here? My own GP does not know what to suggest.

Odd.

She's not on medication for a long term condition (such as asthma)?

I know some drugs can affect the immune system (especially allergy drugs - as some can inhibit/reduce the response of the bodys immune system to an infection, as I found out myself).

My doctor was a bit thrown when i asked him why she keeps getting it. No asthma and no medication that would affect anything. I wondered if the Cephalitis (brain swelling) from the 1st CP damaged her ability to be immune from it I think i will ask to get her referred to someone that might be able to give me the information i need.

It was the most distressing thing ever when she got the CP in her brain, she was like a child that had bad Parkinson's. Her whole body wobbled, even her tongue. She couldn't do anything, just wobble and shake. It took a long time for the effects to go but she is recovered from it now but there is always the worry that it could happen again.

The same virus that leads to shingles which is not very pleasant.

Best do some Google homework and check this out so you know what might be around the corner.

Are you sure that it was a varicella Zoster (chicken pox) infection ?? Usually a bout of CP gives lifelong protection and second infections are rare indeed.

Some other virus infections like Coxsackie A can mimic the symptomsof CP.

Coxsackie A virus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Were all 3 infections confirmed by blood tests for varicella Zoster ??

Foot and mouth?

No blood tests were taken of her last two bouts as we were on holiday. She was unwell both times before she got the blisters and they seemed to follow the same path of CP, itchy weepy then scabby. There was a kid with it on the plane on the way out but i didnt think it would be a problem. Everyone that saw her said it looked like CP. It is a worry as she was so unwell the 1st time i worry it will happen again. She has brain damage anyway so i dont know if this is a factor. I am going to ask for a referral but i dont know what they can do. There does not seem to be a problem with her immune system so i am at a loss

Thanks for the reply though

No......not foot and mouth, it goes by many other names...

I worked for this guy a while ago in Glasgow ........Crispian Scully... looking at viral infections that may have oral symptoms.

Eastman Dental Institute: Staff Web Pages; Professor Crispian Scully, CBE

the serology results didn't always match the clinical picture with a variety of viruses showing different rashes / blisters..

IMHO You need to see a consultant immunologist for advice and help.

warmest wishes

Its me that suffers foot and mouth syndrome

I will get her checked out with an immunologist asap. I dont know what the connection is with being on holiday and getting the problem, i wonder if there is a connection. I would have thought she was more likely to catch it at school than on an airplane and we always stay in a villa not a resort so that narrows it down a bit too

I will let you know if anything comes of it, thanks Shaun

Must have been a real worry SS. I always thought that you would not get it more than once.

Getting into the brain is a nasty business too. That is something else that is new to me. I sincerely hope that she is immune to it now anyway.
