Of all the networks that had to be next to offer it, it had to be Orange.

Having said that, it is delaying the day I buy an over-hyped gadget that I don't need.

Cool

My Orange contract finished last week and so this saves me the bother of changing networks. Been with Orange since the mid-90s now and never really had reason to change, until now. And just in time that reason has gone away.

Looking forward to them announcing the date.

With 37% market share I would imagine Orange have some pretty heavy bargaining power!

Contrary to the original rumours, it is the 3GS (and 3G).

Good to have some competition for O2.

It will be interesting to see if the US follows suit and has the iPhone on networks other than AT&T. Probably won't happen just yet as AT&T renewed their exclusivity deal with Apple fairly recently.

As for pricing of the phone itself, I'd image it'll be the same as for O2, and this will be mandated by Apple. However, that does not mean that Orange can't decide to take a hit in it's margin, pay Apple what it should, but have a lower end user price, but I can't really see that. I think the price difference will be down to the voice and data tariffs, which I believe they have complete control over. Apple may mandate some requirements, but if they want to put a low price for a decent voice and data plan, I'm sure Apple won't mind if they are then shipping a heck of a lot of units.

It's certainly good to see some competition, and I could be wrong here, but I think the UK is the first country to do this, hopefully others will follow suit.

I personally think the iPhone should be worldwide carrier unlocked, and allow the user to decide which network THEY want to use and not be mandated by Apple as to whose network to use. Wouldn't help much in Canada though, Rogers/Fido is currently the only GSM provider, but for the US and other countries it would be very useful.

I wish someone could explain to me whats so special about an Iphone - to me its just a very hyped, extremely well marketed yet average phone.

Ssssh, negative comments like that are not welcome round these parts

Cue Jack...........

To me, its the following.

Smooth UI
lots of developers making apps
good advertising
media hype
fanboys

Good device, but not as unique as it once was, and has plenty of competition depending what you are looking for.

At least there's another provider now other than the robbing O2 bar stewards. Currently have a blackberry curve and it's complete pish, just like every other Blackberry I've had. It keeps locking up and I get very intermittent service from it. Roll on Iphone on Orange.

BB Storm is crap, would not touch it with a bargepole.
As for the boring part, I agree. They are not "exciting" phones, but they do what they are meant to. Thats what I own a phone for. Dont play games etc, so my choice suits me

By finding the BB boring, you have made my point above even more valid. lol
If you want a fashionable icon thats more than just a phone.... iPhone all the way.

A very quick look revealed the following:

Looks like in France you can go with Orange, SFR or Bouygues Telecom, so that's obviously multi-carrier.

Germany seems to only be T-Mobile.

Spain seems only to be Movistar (Telefonica)

I've just renewed our business phones, went from Orange to Vodafone.

They offered a cash incentive of £11k to switchover

Unfortunately Orange didn't even seem to have the slightest bit of interest in re-negotiating
