Default mortgages - Life cover question

We took out our mortgage some 13 years ago, i guess i will need to dig out the paperwork but does life (death) cover come automatically or is it something taken out seperately. We took the mortgage out still young(ish) and fit, 13 years on it is something we need to consider.

If you have a mortgage you have to have life cover...

...however it is not necessarily automatically provided.

However selling it is so profitable it is unlikely they didnt try and sell it to you!!

Are you sure? Neither me or my partner have life cover.

I dont have life cover and dont remember anything saying that I had to have it.

I had a look at costs a couple of months ago and it was only about £6-7 a month for £140k cover.

Critical illness would be a whole lot more though.

If you have an endowment mortgage, the endowment includes life assurance. I went with a repayment mortgage and the building society tried to sell life cover. I didn't take the cover offered and relied on my death in service benefit of my pension to cover it. I don't have any dependants so taking life cover didn't seem worth it.

As well as some life insurance policies I've got some dirt cheap "level term assuance" which covers the mortgage
