Heads up: Shell Garages & credit card cloning
Hi All,
My dad has just received a call from his bank saying his CC has been cloned.
The bank said that the card was cloned at High Wycombe Shell. Apparently, the garages (across the UK) have had new card readers installed, and some dishonest installers have been putting in dodgy ones which store your data un-encripted - which is harvested at a later date.
Credit card cloning ring uncovered
amongst others

It happened to my dad using a Shell garage in Newport Pagnell which has since been demolished. But he first found out when his card would not work and then later someone at the same time as buying fuel, he was apparently in Canada buying babies clothing.
My dad and I still use Shell, but pay by cash.

Normally I would have laughed as well, except for the phone call I got yesterday as I was boarding the train at High Wycombe. It was from our business branch of HSBC saying that there was a fraud marker on my business card. They went through all the security questions and lo and behold, someone has cloned my card and worse still the transactions that alerted them were chip and pin !!! That means not only was my card cloned, but they has the pin number ..****ers
And the last place I used it was a week ago at a shell station.
It didnt take too long for them to work out that me being in HW using my card and my card at the same time being in Edinburgh was impossible.
Suffice to say the card is cancelled and a new one being re-issued.
I guess it wont be too hard to track down the thief as they used the card twice in Edinburgh to buy petrol from a BP station..which I assume has plate recognition cameras.

we got a whole spate of Shell garages doing that down my way, strangely all owned by Sri Lankens (not that I am suggesting my "bit darker then me" homies are responsible in anyway).
But this kind of stuff and other isht will surface thanks to a recession and the domino effect it has on everything in society.

the chip and pin technology -- contrary to what the Banks will have you believe is flawed
those machines that you put your card into -- are hackable because they do not encrypt the traffic -- this has been prove by bods at cambridge university
and yes shell garages are the worst offenders

Was round our way a few years back. Thought it had been dealt with but then my card was cloned twice inside of 3 months earlier this year. It was either Shell or a well thought of Scooby parts supplier...
Still stuck with Shell as I need 99 RON and we don't have a Tesco, but only pay with cash.

I'm mostly paid in cash, and pay for most things in cash. My other wage goes into the bank to cover living expenses, but I rarely use a card to pay for anything these days apart from the occasional online purchase.

Never use cards in a petrol station, these thing have been going on for years. Mostly done by asian groups.
And don't call me racist, I know an asian guy who does it and he even tells me they are all at it!!

My wife scards were stolen & used a few years back,
they tried to deny liability by stating C&P was used....
it was a ball ache, but we got our cash back...
her numbers were not with her cards at all

Yes, true and chip and pin is not the answer to prevent fraud
A well placed camera set up to film the keypad and a something to read the chip, these aren't 'del boys' these are sophisticated, smart and well funded criminals with access to the same technology as the cc companies have, it is worth 100's of millions to he criminals and so they do take it seriously.
easlier money that drugs and robbing banks, little to no risk to them.

I always pay in cash to be honest, as above it is how i am paid, so it makes sense.
Nowadays i usually just use Asda 95 ron as it is more convenient, and usually the cheapest (plus the car can use it without blowing up )
I wonder why it is always shell ?

I filled up my car at a Shell garage in Peterborough yesterday and my Credit card was declined and asking for a referral.
My sister told me about this thread so I explained to the woman behind the counter that it had probably been cloned in their station in Wycombe (only place I use that card) and she snapped back at me "it isn't anything to do with that, it's probably that the bill hasn't been paid, none of my business", this was in front of a now full shop
Too ******* right it was none of her business, I was livid at that remark because I pay the card off in full every month and it's my company credit card. Eventually she got through to my credit card people who confirmed who I said I was and got it authorised but she didn't tell me what was going on and didn't apologise.
She gave me a number to call so I called that on my way home and found out that my card had been used to attempt to withdraw £500 cash in London on the 17th, last time I used the card was on the 8th before I went on holiday. They are now issuing me a new card.
I called Shell this morning to complain about her attitude and to also complain about my card being cloned at one of their stations, I await a couple of phone calls

Agree with the c+p comments.
some clever so and so student at Cambridge uni, put tetris on a pin pad much to the dismay of their employers and their supplier

Wouldn't go to Shell, don't believe the Optimax hype anyway, i'll stick in Tesco 99 and pay in cash.
