For that budget - you could do a LOT worse than this little baby.
Fujifilm FinePix J50 Digital Camera - Silver 2.7 inch: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

I have a fujifilm finepix and it does a good enough job.

Not on a par with

Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body Only: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

but you pays yer money, you dip yer bread

In another life (approx 100 years or so ago) i was a professional photographer, my weapon of choice was always Canon 35mm slr's, and a Mamyia RB67, I wish i had never sold them but ho-hum
Canon A1, T90 and EOS1 and a huge range of lenses from 24mm -300

these days i just want a point and shoot

Try the Casio EX series, quite cheap and great results.

I've always had Sony Cybershots - several different ones but all have been brilliant - and spare batteries etc easy to obtain.

http://www.cameras.co.uk/reviews/olympus-mju-840.cfm

Went for this when I was looking for a similar camera.

Works fine for me

Couple of shots;

Good light

Very poor light - hand held (ooh err)
