The Iphone, what is the big deal?
I'm really struggling at the mo to find reason why people are so hung up over getting an Iphone. By the looks of things you either get a free old Iphone with an overly expensive semi decent tariff or pay a small fortune and get an overly expensive **** contract?
So explain to me why people are so eager to get this brick sized heavy, gimmicked to the hilt phone? I've seen the Nokia 5800 about now and I really am unsure what the Iphone realistically offers over it.

I have the latest 3gs version and it's the best phone I've ever owned, blacksberrys,n97's,htc etc are no match to it the apps available are endless and with 3g Internet you can literally do anything you would on a normal windows or mac based computer whilst on the move you can even dyno your car with the dynolicious app it uses the inbuilt g-sensor

My mate`s even doubles as a spirit level!
I`ve lost count of the times I`ve gone out and needed to know if a desk was level or not...........
It even makes phone calls and does a clever thing with a beer glass that kept me entertained for about 3 seconds.
It`s just a status symbol.

Suppose it depends what you are after in a phone really.
My old iPod nano had just died, so I upgraded my phone to the iPhone 3g last year. Has a bigger memory than my old nano, so I can get more music on there, makes and receives calls, get my work and personal emails on there, can browse the web.
So why not?
I'm sure there are other phones out there that could do something similar, but for me the iPhone was a perfect match for my criteria.

I have the Touch Mp3 player and that is superb, also have a LG Renoir touch phone, its ok, nice camera, touch screen seemed great until I got the touch and then I totally saw the point, soem others may be better at various aspects but the Iphone is just so pleasant to use and is quite versatile.
Though my enthusiasm is tempered by the fact that it does seem to be a tosser magnet of the highest order, every trendy w4nker, Junior Estate Agent, Mini Driver, Beanie Wearer, "Can I get" saying, Big Brother Contestant, Wannabe, saggy jeans wearing, Apprentice type **** jockey in the world has them, nothing makes me want to hit someone more than producing an Iphone with a flourish, its kind of the effect that mobiles had when they first appeared. They are acceptable if someone you know has one and they arent wearing Anettecrosbie and Feltch, dont have tw4tty hair and you know they just like it and arent doing the "me too" thing.
Apple stuff is great but Apple fans bring out the worst in me.

I-phone is about as robust as a chocolate piston.
Done exchanges at work on 5 this week alone, all with fecked screens. Sick of the sight of the damn things.

The phone is great, the Apple fanboys who queued round the block to get the first one the day it came out and befoe they had the slightest idea whether it was any good or not and now pull it out in front of you and brandish it like some deity we are all supposed to worship are the problem.

Curious to know what excuses/explanations were given for the screens being wrecked. Simply a "I dropped it" type thing? I got an otterbox case for mine as I'm known for being a bit clumsy from time to time, and, fingers crossed, it's surviving ok.
Onto the OP's question of what is the big deal. Well, there is the whole "must have" side of things. It's the new darling and if you're anyone you *have* to have an iPhone. As others have said, Apple kit is stylish and thus appeals to many.
I can completely sympathize about the "look at me" types who flip it out like a status symbol. Yeah mate, I've got one too, it's in my pocket, I don't feel the need to whip it out and act like a ****. This kind of behavior doesn't help those of us who don't want to look like *****, as if we use the phone in a non-twatish manner then people assume we're *****. Ah well.
It's somewhat obvious I'm an Apple *****, so I'm slightly biased I've had a 4th Gen iPod for a long time and have replaced the batter and hard drive in it (went from 40 to 60GB) and it's a good device, but getting a bit long in the tooth and needed replacing.
I have/had a SE w200a, which isn't a bad phone, hell, it makes calls, which is all I really need to do with a phone.
I wanted a little bit of convergence, so an iPhone seemed to make sense to me. It would combine my phone and iPod into one device (alas not at the capacity level I'd have liked, but I'm coping well with just 32GB ). It also added a few things of use, for example, mobile internet. There have been times when I've wanted to look something up when out and about, be it a simple price check of a product in another store, or firing off a quick reply to an email whilst waiting for the car to be serviced. Yes, nothing life altering I know.
The GPS side of things is also somewhat handy too. I do have a Garmin GPS unit and it's usually found dangling round my neck when we are out racing, as it helps with navigation. There's a GPSKit application which looks like it will enable me to add waypoints by coordinates, which is perfect for entering marker buoy's on the race course, something other apps lack. Ironically the marine specific Navionics software does not allow this, a MAJOR failing in my book. I just wish Garmin's Bluechart maps could be used on the iPhone and read in my existing waypoints, would be so handy. The reason for bluechart is to provide accurate depth and other handy marine info you'd not find on a land based mapset.
The app store is a bit of a gimmick and it's far from perfect. I do not like the fact you cannot trial software and I will admit to using installous/appulous to download applications to trial them before buying them. I've been told if you're not happy with an app purchase you can complain to Apple and get a refund, but I don't think you should have to do this.
They should allow for trial versions, and perhaps the in-app fee stuff might allow this. The app is downloadable for free, but after a time you need to purchase it from within the app itself. I'll chat with a dev friend of mine and see if that could work.
An example of such a situation would be Navigon's GPS Mapping application. It's not exactly cheap $65 I think, and so I don't want to buy something, find it's crap and then have hassle getting back. There might not be hassle involved, but I don't always have the patience to find out. Yes, so I'm a naughty boy and download a crack copy of the app. I then try it out, and if it works (which it did, brilliantly) I'll delete it from the phone and the purchase a copy of it, making myself all nice and legal.
There are many, many useless apps on the store, fart sounds, dog whistles, and god knows what else, but people seem willing to pay for some of them. I've got a few apps on my phone, FTPOnTheGo, Jaadu VNC, and a few others I can't recall right now. I don't use them all the time, but every now and then I use them and I think their purchase warrants the usage I give them.

And before anyone thinks I have lost it or been bribed, I will continue.
The above is the exact reason I love my Blackberry.
It IS about what fits your criteria. And not about what makes a bulge in your pocket or boosts your ego.
I think the iPhone is a great device, and as Markus has said, for those who bought it for what it is as a device, and not on a fanboy must have toy, **** extension, its a fair choice.
However, me and touchscreens are not good friends, I just about bumble about with my 5800 lol. So my preference is a NON touchscreen, hence a Berry.
Final word about it from me.
1st Gen, great device, market changing. 2nd and 3rd Gen, an improvement on THEIR device, but no longer a market leader and innovater.

i got one because what was the point carrying an ipod and a mobile, now it may be large but it's smaller than those two together. the email is ok compared to blackberry, the text display is cool and there's always great apps other than the silly ones...
trouble is it's apple and they dont like sharing. does any know how i can send a song to someone? create ring tones from my none itune downloaded music?

There are loads of guides on how to make ringtones from mp3's. A quick google will get you sorted.
I bought an iPhone for the same reasons as above, I didn't want to carry a phone and my iPod as separate units. The Phone works very well, the screen is better than every other touch screen available on any other phone I have tried. The onscreen keyboard is very usable. I won't say it's without it's faults, the battery life being the main gripe IMHO and the fact that they cost a lot to buy.
I'm glad I bought one & would recomend you try one to see what the fuss is about.

As for the comment about them being robust, I have heard some people sending them back however mine has been road tested properly. Dropping the phone out of a jeep type car on the way to a meeting, dropped it again on a rough path, still works fine.
As with all things electrical sometimes things die just for the sheer hell of it.
