What AV to get
Hi guys, I'm after an AV for 300-450. Anybody got one of these? or know a bit about AVs?
Sony dh800
Sony 2400es
Denon 1610
Denon 1910
onkyo 607
I have a ps3 for blue ray, elac cinema 2 5.1 speakers and a PX80 plasma.
avforum love all the above, what hifi rate the sonys and Denon 5 stars, onkyo only four, richersounds were pushing the onkyo 607 and 5's on me.
The dh800 is good for 300 with five year, is it worth spending 100-150 more for the denon or 2400es? The Denon 1910 is very highly rated but the most expensive.
Dont rly need the 7.1 or up scaling, mostly be using the AV for films.

I do not have the Denon products listed but I do have a Denon AV amp (2309 - you can probably get one for a very good price if you can find one) and a Denon DVD player - both of which are outstanding.
As for Apple - they make better products that work better. Simple as!

Cheers for the quick reply, do have a Denon? my main dilemma is what hifi generally are a good starting point and rate the sonys ( though dolike the 1910) but as u say Sony can be a bit style over content. Think I've counted out the onkyo, dont know the brand.

There is little the 2309 can't do - it has masses of inputs and outputs (you can use it just as an AV preamp if you want - rare on lower cost units).
And is extremely flexible in operation.

Posted to add that it seems that 2309s have gone up in price not down! I got one when they first came out for £599 and expected that a year later for them to be cheaper! Apparently not! Still worth a look to see if you can get one for your budget.

Looks good but yeah, bit out of my budget. More tempted by th 1910 now tho......head says dh800 heart says Denon 1910, then theres the bloomin 2400es in the middle giving me a silly grin and wink...grrrrrrr what to get, not a bad dilemma though I guess :-)

Onkyo used to do some very good mid to high end kit, but not heard much about what they are doing recently

Just my 2pence regarding What HiFi? reviews, they are worth **** all squared. Check out whos advertising the most with them and then check out the product reviews, a trend will appear! Their reviews are outstandingly rubbish and never make sense but blind you with words that actually don't describe anything at all.
Completely an utter rubbish magazine that i would never use when selecting Hi-Fi/AV equipment as its quite clear they know nothing about anything.

Um...Personaly I find what hifi rather good, I spend a lot of time doing research before spending on my toys, and have found them to be bang on most the time. I take ur point though as I'm shore they get the odd incentive, hence the reason I always use multiple sources for research, both professional and not. hmmm, still dont know, sony are a good solid make, but Denon are good with sound.... driving my girlfriend mad now LOL

Onkyo have a reputation for unreliability. I know two people personally who've had problems with 606/7's, and there are similar reports on AV Forums.
You can't fault Denon or Yamaha, with the DSP-AX763 available for under £300 in RS clearance lists.
Agree with the comments on What HiFi reviews, it's been like that for over 20 years. I remember them bigging up the Gale 4 speakers, which was a 2-way floorstander, bi-wireable, mass-fillable, and all for about £200. 5*'s in every review, prompting me to get some from RS on test and take them to my local 'proper' hi-fi specialist where we blew them into the weeds with a £130 set of Mission bookshelfs on £70 stands. They were gash ! RS will tell you whatever they have the highest stock level of or make the most profit on is the best.

I have a Denon AV amp in my cabin, was about £230, sounds ok but a bit gutless, maybe I am doing something wrong, decent tannoys, Mission centre, doesnt really do Bass, the speakers on another amp were really gutsy and bassy, is it cos AV amps really need a Sub ?

It may need telling that there isn't a sub. If it thinks there is one then it will be trying to direct LF sound to it and not to the connected speakers.

Just to let people know, I found a Denon 1909 for £378, very happy :-) . Was decided on the 1610 for £350, 1910 was a bit ott for me, Sound and vision guy kept pushing it but I was set on the cheaper one. The 1909 was a second choice if I could get one still, was delighted when he said he had one. promised myself I'd only go to max £360 for one, at 378 its still a bargain, 1910s £450 up. Cant wait to get it tomorrow.

I went with the Denon over sony in the end as most my usage will be for film and games. Apparently Sony is better for music and Denon for film? still thinking about it lol
I dont need all the 1909 has let alone the 1910 or Sony 2400, but the temptation, its only about £60 difference
.....just have to remind myself of my original budget....Oh, and if you want a bargain apparently thres three ex demo models going for £329 at Sevenoaks, cant remember witch stores but you can see them on the website. Going to see if I can get a few more quid off mine, theres a lot of water between £329 and £378 the cheeky buggers.

I really only needed an AV that did all the latest HD sound, had HDMI for my PS3. More and more I investigated the more I wanted
The Sony dh800 was at the top of my list and looks a bargain for the money if you dont want to do any upscaling. Looking through the mags and reading avforum etc I decided on the Denon in the end, the 1610 is really good value, feature wise its very similar to the 1910 but £100 less. I like a lot of the features on the Denons, though I dont really need them now I'm going to have this AV for a few years and they may be nice to have later.7.1 is a bit overkill for me hence the reason I was happy to go for the 5.1 1610, till I sore the 1909 for £30 more.
Best thing to do is go and listen to them and make your own mind up, that's the best advice I found.

We'll I'm going to have the following connected.
PS3 via HDMI
SKY via HDMI & optical cable
Wii via I don't know what to be honest - component?
I also want the TV connected via optical - incase I watch freeview or something?
So thats me using 2 optical ports, 2 HDMI's and something else for the wii
I might actually connect the hifi up to it also.
What I want effectively is 1 channel on TV (which will be say HDMI 1) and then just change sources on the amp - thats right isn't it?
The Denon AVR1610 seems more modern looking than the Onkyo.
Do Denon suffer from overheating issues like those alledged of the Onkyo
