I was listening to Under a Blood Red Sky yesterday and that same thought occurred to me too, In fact there was a time they were a fair way beyond merely good
In fact, with the one or two noteable exceptions, everything they've done since Rattle & Hum has been pretty ****

I actually think the music has held up ok, it's their public image which has made it harder and harder to keep liking them. The earlier albums were angsty, not up-your-own-arsey

LOL at you lot.
It is widely accepted that the finest stadium tour ever undertaken by any band in the world ever was U2's early 90s Zoo TV tour and having seen it and many other of their tours I can confirm that on the Zoo tour they were pretty much untouchable, but... I have seen them on every tour since and with the exception of Pop Mart I think they are pretty close to their 90s high.
Musically they have tried many different directions for which they are to be commended and you may like some of their albums more than others, but even the recent offerings are hardly bad. Even if you don't like Bono's public persona there is nothing wrong with the music.
To say they peaked pre Live Aid is ridiculous. Achtung Baby and The Joshua Tree are two of the finest rock albums ever recorded for a start.
Oh and I saw them Saturday in Cardiff, they were excellent as always

F1 Fan, you're obviously a fan
I have everything they've done except for Pop. you are right about JTree, and Achtung, great albums. After that there have been 2/3 tracks per albums, Kite, Beautiful Day, Vertigo etc that were very good, the rest mediocre to the high standards they had previously set.

I was there too, on the pitch about ten rows back from the outer walkway. Absolutely superb. Amazing atmosphere and they really rocked the place. The spaceship / claw stage was
There are only a few bands in the world that can put on a show like that
Admittedly I am a fan but I've only seen them live once before and that was on the Zoo TV tour at Wembley. That was top notch too but I'd say this latest tour is on a par with it.
As for albums, Achtung Baby and Zooropa are classics IMHO though Zooropa formed a bit of a sound track for us to a particularly enjoyable and drug addled summer, so fond memories. Oh how it would be good to be young and carefree again
Latest album is a real return to form IMHO, have played it many times.

Have to agree with F1_Fan. I watched them in all tours post Lovetown tour and ZOOTV/ZOOROPA tour was immense. Will always have a hard time living up to that high standard but I think they have pretty much, albiet with popmart, done that. 360 tour is pretty amazing feat of engineering.
AB and Zooropa were class and Original Soundtracks even had a few jems even though it was heavily influenced by Eno.
In my opinion it takes a young, raw band to create albums such as War and Boy. And as tghey are approaching there 50's the direction they are taking is still great (IMO).

the first concert i ever went was the joshua tree tour at the arms park, also went to zoo tv as an event zoo was incredible, but the first time i saw them was better problably because it was more about the music and not about the visual spectacle.i still listen to the u2 albums up to joshua tree very often.
