Default How long can an alcoholic go without a drink?

So what's the actual definition? 12 hours, 24 hours, 2 days? I've just gone 5 days without alcohol and am feeling pretty smug with myself and consequently do not consider myself an alcoholic. In fact I had a can of Stella at lunchtime to celebrate!

They can't (Go without). That's the definition of "adiction", or *olic!. Coffee, chilli, smokos, beer, wine, ****, food....whatever...

Stay off the Stella, enjoy a "live" bitter (Where are you?).

OK you're on. Off to the pub garden straightaway. Probably kick-start the weekend with an Abbott.

I think the definition is thinking that you even might need to ask?!!!

Oooh, nice. Very similar to Gayles HSB, Hordean Speacial Brew, Hampshire, not had a drop since...1996 (I think Whitbread soaked up that market there, but I don't know).

a friend of mine works for the WHO (word health organisation) and their rules are you have to be able to give up for 4 consecutive days for 4 consecutive weeks - apparently

I'd say there are a lot of people out there with a drink problem with varying degrees of alcohol dependency. A true alcoholic though cannot go the day without a drink without getting terrible shakes and other withdrawl symptoms

I'd suggest they reached a level of alchohol dependency way before this.

What, psychologically?

If you get withdrawl symptoms then your an addict

Mates gfriend is drying out now , in' hospital', she wants to come out after a week and a half , doc says no ( hopefully)

- the withdrawl symptoms are scary to witness ,fits and everything

If you ask yourself the question, ''Am I an alcoholic?'' then your not. You may drink exessive amounts/too much but its when your saying to yourself '' I'm not an alcoholic'' and drinking like theres no tomorrow, thats when the trouble begins. Its the denial.
Drink is the first thing alcoholics think of when they get up in the moring/afternoon. Some might drink all day. Some might make it to work and go home early just to start drinking.
I have a few cans every night, it helps me switch off and get to sleep, but I dont think about it all day.
I used to have a boss who drank spirits every day. Came in rough, went home early. The biggest decision he made all day was whether to buy Vodka or Whiskey. Used to come to work with the telly remote instead of the work mobile. He had to sign job sheets with two hands because of the shakes.

I've known a few alchies - you will know it when you see it...

More analysis suggests that I think there is a massive difference between over-indulgence in, say 3 cans of Stella or most of a bottle of wine as a 'reward' after work 3-4 few times a week as opposed to a physical and genetic lust for alcohol ON YOUR OWN that changes your general behaviour.

I think its easy to get into the habit of having a few beers at home every night. It just becomes routine and hard to stop doing it then.

A couple of years back I used to always have a beer or two at home after work, and maybe a 4pack on a friday night if I wasn't going out, but now I rarely drink at home - might have 1 or 2 if in on a friday, but often none.

IMO alcoholism is way more common than most people would think, and I know people at work who drink at least 1 bottle of wine every night, and 2-3 on a Friday and Sat.

I know someone who hasn't had a drink in over 20 years but still considers themself an alcoholic. Their definition is that an Alcaholic can go months even years without a drink but once they have one they must continue until they drink themselves into oblivion !!

Do you consider them alcoholics though Pete? ( I dont).

I think it is easy to hand out "isms". Alcoholism in my book is a serious destructive disease and is genetic - not bourne of self indulgence. It isnt a love of a regular drop of red (guilty!). Alcoholics don't care what the colour is...

not genetic, it is an illness, though was'nt recognised as such until the 70's, the brain/cell structure does change, hence the "dependancy" on alcohol what ever the type.

I enjoy a beer or two. Sometimes even a vodka or a whisky .......

Yes. Apparently its not uncommon for pissartists to have a week off, just to prove to themselves that they arent alchoholics.....
