Question Pros & Cons of going to a phone provider directly...

Are there any pros these days?

What are the merits of going to say, CPW, or Phones4U?

Just investigating

I'm with vodafone recently wanted to upgrade handset and tariff to a higher tariff
I went to vodafone who quoted me 100 quid for a bb curve so I went to phones 4 u who did the upgrade
Got same handset for free and they gave me 50 quid for my old 6300 so which my mrs was pleased with as she spent it
Definately better for me with phones 4u

No handsets are free.

I take your point however the terms of the contract were the same with Vodafone and Phones 4 u i.e line rental, free minutes and internet access etc and Vodafone still wanted £100 for the handset so the better deal was still with Phones 4 u

In the past i have found that the customer service of P4U or CPW or similar to be awful compared to the service provider directly!

IIRC, I've only really dealt with P4U, and when my NEW phone went wrong, they had to send it back to be repaired Wasn't happy. Especially with no loan handset until it was returned.

What about these independent dealers? Can they actually compete price-wise?

I just go with whoever is giving the best deal for the phone / tariff I want. Last one was from affordablemobiles.com

They are all phone providers

Should this be a question of going to the network provider directly?!

Kind of. My understanding is that there are merits for either going to the provider directly, in order to get the better support, as opposed to going to a shop/indy where you can perhaps get a better immediate deal, but potentially worse customer support....

Would this be correct?

Question for all those who have gone via a dealer rather than direct....

If you have a problem of any sort who do you approach?
Having never done this I honestly dont know if you just speak to the network or the store of purchase.

Im guessing handset problems are with the dealer, network probs etc, you go direct?

Im not interested in gimmicks usually so tend to stick with the network who look after me.

I've got my last few phones through 3 directly. Not seen anything better around, but not looked too hard I suppose. If anything goes wrong, you ring them up - simple!

I will get a Blackberry type device next, maybe will look around then.

Blackberry you say.............
*nerd hat on..

Good choice I must say, if me and my band of merry berry's can help, let us know lol

Personally I would only get a Berry from a network, only because of the way they work, and the networks having dedicated support.

Because I have so many contracts, it makes sense to keep all my Oranges in one box

I've upgraded via the providers for years but last year I went to CarPhone whorehouse and they managed to sell my number to every scam artist going. Never again.

If you have a problem with the phone for instance on a network but have gone via cpw for instance, then you have to go through the company that provided the contract, ie cpw, if its network related then you can go via the network (no signal in area as an example), but billing etc, contract provider, so your dealing 3rd party and it may take a little longer to resolve issues

I'm currently in training for a phone company, dealing with retentions and we have to checking out adverts and agreements from P4U etc. and its frightening how dodgy some of the offers actually are. I personally will be ringing my provider O2 directly come upgrade time as I bought my phone thru Carphone Warehouse and they were **** and sold my details on so from day dot I have been getting cold calls for every company going!.

Ah and as i've just finished a bit of training on Blackberry's my next phone will defo be one, they are fantastic unlike them pish Iphones.

Standss to reason surley thatll youll get the best service direcly with the provider
