Can you imagine that today...
AF: We're gonna have three B52 in close formation, at low level.
H&S: Er, no.
AF: What about if we fire a live missile
H&S: No
AF: What about if we safely destroy the missile before it hits the ground?
H&S: With what?
AF: Well, another missile.
H&S: No...anything else, or can we go now?
AF: I spose napalm is out of the question then?

Great find, sums up that era, amazing advances, unbounded optimism and bravado, that must have been a great show, I caught the end of the proper airshow where safety wasnt the main concern but that Ukranian one is very sobering, I read an account of a guy searching for his little lad, he found his head which doesnt even bear thinking about.

I remember watching the Fleet Air Arm practicing for an air display at RNAS Yeovilton in the 80's. There were loads of Sea Kings flying at low level up and down the runway with under slung field guns and land rovers etc. dropping them off and flying off followed by FRAS.1 Sea Harriers doing VTOL and short take off runs.
I also remember visiting Upper Heyford in July 1990 and watching loads of activity from a vantage point at the end of the runway. F-111Fs C130Hs, A-10As and F15Es were taking of like mad. A month later , we realised that they were off to visit Baghdad!!
Brilliant!

No one cared about the rain which arrived before but cleared away in time.

I did a travelling display both at Halton and Biggin Hill for Battle of Britain I think but cannot remember the date without checking in my logbook for that time. I distinctly remember dropping into the hole before the runway threshold and climbing out again like the Spitfire always used to do! I tried it some time before in a Chipmunk during a display but found myself embarrassed because it did not have the power to climb out and I had to do a climbing spiral turn! Must have made the Spitfire pilot laugh

Found it in a log book. It was on 18th Sept '71. I took part in a demonstration 4XVulcan scramble at Finningley for the Battle of Britain show there and then flew south to do displays at Coltishall and Biggin Hill. I did a bit of a "flypast" at Thruxton because I was supposed to be there for practice but they said if I did that they would let me drive there the next day
It was a nice day and we were able to fly all the way there and back at 2000 feet which is always enjoyable.
The aircraft was a bit heavier than normal for a display because of the fuel I had to carry to get there and back which is a little restrictive on how much of a hooligan you can be in some manoeuvres.

After the fly by's I used to do a steep wingover at either end of the runway to reverse the flight direction, and also do two steep turns in the centre of the display line one in each direction opening and closing the bomb doors so that the public could see them operating.
The Vulcan is a truly amazing aircraft and it is a shame that 558 is so restricted in what can be done now.
