Use torrents. If you stand up, spin round on one foot 3 times on the spot and clap your hands it's legal.

iTunes Store, most of the music there should be DRM free, though it will be in AAC (m4a) format, so your device may not play it, but you can burn to CD-RW and re-import as MP3.

Amazon store is another one, but the UK store might not provide MP3 downloads of albums. The US one does, but it won't let me purchase them as I'm in Canada.

mp3 dot com is worth a look as well.

Just looked at mp3panda and it looks to me to be very similar to allofmp3, which claimed to be legal, but which most of us know wasn't exactly legit. $0.50 for Coldplay's latest seems a little cheap to me. Looking at their contact info reveals the following:

MUSICLINE LTD
Address: 7, Timirayzevskaya street, Moscow, 127422, Russian Federation
Tel. +1 (716) 989-66-77

I've used Audiojelly and Beatport in the past.

Trackitdown - Dance Music MP3/WAV/Merchandise Distribution Centre

Not the cheapest but decent quality downloads and don't distort on a big sound system. Essential if you're playing the tunes out.
