Default HTC Hero

Ok, so who has one?

I'm suprised there is not a thread on them yet.

Get mine on wednesday, does any body know of any good places to get applications for it?

my mrs just got one on vodafone. very impressed. puts the iphone to shame in my opinion, especially when you get the same package for £10 a month less.

tempted to get the HTC Magic on Orange when my upgrade is due in a few months.

google street view and compass mode is very good.

HTC are really pushing hard now to make an impact, and IMO making great progress.
Dont compare to the iPhone please, its only gonna start a fight lol.

Curious looking thing isn't it. Someone else I know is getting one too.
Lovely spec though.
For those not familiar with it... HTC Hero - Full phone specifications

Again, the Magic, I have heard only good things about them. Well done HTC, keep it going.

Im half expecting HTC to make the first big mainstream full qwerty with touchscreen, BB style phone, with touchscreen I mean.
Like this but with touch... http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_ozone-2886.php

Just like the last dozen phones from HTC this year that put the iPhone to shame it'll be mediocre at best and replaced in a blink of the eye leaving you paying ten pound less for an outdated and unsupported phone. Trust me.

I think we have covered this, each to their own
Replaced or not, the buyer will have the phone they chose and were happy with

The iPhone is not the be all and end all. Nice interface though (de ja vu hits)

Got to say, Wifey's had her HTC Magic now for the last fortnight. A few niggling issues, but it's pretty good

Recommended most certainly.

320 x 480 pixels WTF? Its like an N97, but for poor people who like 'slimscreen'

Can I just say the screen on the N97 640x360 16:9 is AMAZING (or should I start a new thread ) Cunningly this fits the same size as stuff like the BBC i Player!!!

HTC have been a favourite of mine for ages, did some contract work in the past developing pocket pc software and we used a whole bunch of the HTC branded XDA II/IIIs, Varios etc and I could never fault them.

I think Android is the only thing putting me off (OS is awesome though) as I want something I can use for development work so might have to learn towards something Windows Mobile from HTC

tbh, i've been put off by the N97 after reading the poor customer reviews (poor battery life etc)

Still not sure about which way I'm going to jump.

What I would say is take a good look at proper review sites such as GSM Arena, who review most phones, and are unbiased.

Asking SN if you should get a certain phone, and mentioning an iPhone is suicide lol.

Seriously though, there are some great phones hitting the market at the mo, as all the manufacturers race to try and even be 1/10th as good as the iPhone, so the market is ripe with pickings.

HTC Hero is a well packaged devices, and similar spec to the iPhone, obviously not the fantastic UI, but capabilities are good.
Samsung is also a BIG player if you are after a touch screen phone, so consider them too.

Was just looking at a review of the Samsung Jet actually and they say the following (which is an interesting choice of words)
Anyway, the Samsung Jet is bound to rub shoulders with devices that fall in quite a different price range. But if smartphone skill is a must, you will simply have to dig extra deep in your pocket and asset your sights on Samsung i8910 Omnia HD (for the features) or an Apple iPhone (for the attitude).
Have a look at the video quality from the i8910 HD on this review.
Worthy for consideration given its capabilities. Symbian might be a downside for some.

lol get with the times Jack

Announced 2009, February
Status Available. Released 2009, May

Was out long before the Hero.

Like I said before, some like to stay current month to month, other manufacturers like to launch once a year amidst media frenzy

Bumparoony

Just ordered a T-Mobile G2 for delivery (for free basically as my monthly bill was always 30quid anyway) and as far as i know, it is just a HTC Hero with a different badge.

It will be replacing my ageing N93 that is now driving me insane.
Them crazy websites have already offered me 50quid for the N93 so its going a journey

Anybody on SN with one of these phones who has added the updated firmware?
Does it really smooth out all the little bugs i have read about?

Cheers!

Htc Hero, you get most, if not all you new applications from the Android market, which is on the phone. There are other websites to download other apps. You need to allow third party applications to download from other websites.

Nice phone, but not as good as my Rooted G1

I have the touch pro 2 and its a cracking phone and call quality is far far superior than the iphone, the hands free speaker is superb for talking calls while driving whereas the speaker on the iphone is terrible. If all you want is games the iphone is ok but if you want a good phone not so

Cant wait, TMobile spazzed up my order so it was not delivered on saturday like they promised

*******s, i took the morning off work as well waiting in for a none existant delivery

Rang them up to complain, some call centre gonk tried to lie to me and tell me that Royal Mail were definitely delivering the phone tomorrow before 12 (what the **** its sunday??!!?)

SO i told him what i thought of him, hung up and retried with another call centre monkey
This one was more intelligent, and worked out that my order was stuck in "open sales" whatever the hell that means, so it needed to be cancelled *sigh* and then reordered yet again, this time with a delivery date for tuesday

Had another winge at them for trying to take me for a mug, and wrangled some kind of refund on my next bill, which no doubt will not happen

At least the phone seams pretty good, feckin N93 switched itself off 4 times today

I have one & it's great.

I went for it over the iPhone due to the deal on Orange.

Works like a phone should & has fancy bits too.

Enjoy it when (if) you get it

Was delivered this morning, had a bit of trouble flashing it to the newest rom file.

For some reason the HTC sync software does not want to play ball with my laptop, although it worked fine on my desktop

I only used the phone for about 5 mins before flashing it, but the speed difference was quite noticeable afterwards! especially when flicking left and right.

I have not stopped playing with it all night tbh, i like it

My dad has been using HTC phones for sometime now since the original O2 branded XDA handsets and he loves them, he's tried other brands such as Samsung, Nokia, BB and I phones but keeps going back to HTC. (he organises the phone contracts for a large company so changes handsets reguarly on the basis of "testing" them.)
Personally I dont like touch screen so I have a BB

Exactly Dave, and by being different, it cant be better or worse
Nothing wrong with daring to be different, and even being happy with what you have

I have not used an Iphone so i can comment on that, mine seams pretty slick, especially after i managed to get the thing flashed, the speed/smoothness afterwards was actually quite noticeable, maybe they overclocked the phone during the flash

I loved the features the N93 gave me, but the thing was to collosal to carry around 95% of the, while this one is a lot sleeker, it does have a bit of weight to it to be honest, was quite suprised when i first picked it up, hopefully that means it is built properly

Had a problem with some free satnav app not opening up, but that's probably down to crap app code.

The plan is to pay for the Copilot Nav 8 software anyway, so it is not an issue (unless the paid for sat nav ***** up as well lol)

Installed a few other little apps as a quick test, i was suprised to see the beebplayer one to allow me to watch TV, although the quality of the streamed image seams a bit ****, i dont have anything to compare it with though, so it might be normal for mobile tv watching
