Default Dispute in a licensed taxi.

Well we got a short taxi ride home tonight, which was punctuated by the ping.... ping..... ping..... ping..... ping.... of a seatbelt alarm for almost the entire journey. We asked the driver to turn off the noise, to which he replied "you can't turn it off". I retorted with "Yes you can - you can put your seatbelt on. It's like having tinnitus back here". He retorted with "We don't have to wear them by law". Well, I argued the toss forcefully, absolutely positive that EVERYONE had to wear a seatbelt in this country, only to find when we got home that there is indeed an exemption for taxi drivers. How can this be? I'm outraged. I can't see the reason for the exemption for the life of me.

And in any case, his refusal to wear a seatbelt is causing annoyance to his passengers by the continuous alarm tone. So we reported him to his employers.

Any thoughts?

Isn't there more important things to be outraged by that a minimum wage earner headbutting the steering wheel in an accident?

He's deliberately making pings go off in my ear. That's a hanging offence in my book.

What peeved you more , the fact he wouldnt put the belt on, or the fact he had one over on you as he *was* within the law?

Taxi drivers, not minicab driving scruffers. They make a damned sight more than NMW though...

Both, absolutely. I hate being wrong.

But as a customer, I'm right. I don't wish to be pinged at relentlessly, no matter how short the journey.

How hard would it have been for him to just put the seatbelt on? How could he stand the constant pinging?

He was content to tune it out of his hearing until the alarm stopped after two miles' driving.
That's what gets me - he was perfectly happy to give annoyance to his customers for the sake of exercising his rights within the law.

I'm shocked he spoke English, or even that Bubs is multilingual.

Commendable in either case

You tell me. He was of taxi-driver ethnic background ( ), about twenty-two years old and showed no obvious signs of having won the lottery recently.

It's worse than that.

Puffy would get a nose bleed coming this far north though.
