Default Flooding

A mate of mine has been flooded today. This has happened a couple of times before in the last 4 years and it has caused quite a bit of damage today.

He hasn't claimed off his house insurance in the past and again refuses to let the insurance co know what has happened today as he fears his house insurance will go sky high and possibly affect the sale of his house if he ever decides to move.

There are drains near to his house but it would appear that these cannot cope with the amount of water when it rains hard. Basically the drains overflow and cause a small lake at the front of his drive which then flows down his drive and into the house. Passing traffic make the problem alot worse.

Are the council liable. Could he claim off them?

He needs to contact whoever is responsible for waste water in the area, it won't be the council, it'll be the water board, whoever he pays his bill to.

I suggest a letter to them with a copy to the local MP.

The storm drains can't cope all over the country as that is what is causing a lot of the flooding. Not claiming from his insurance will make no difference to how he can resell his house, it just affects his pocket.

You will need to contact the council as water from the surrounding highway should not drain on to private land. Drains/gullies are the highways responsibility, hence the term highway drain.

Sewers are the responsibility of the local water authority.
