A Bit Of Legal Advice/Standing
Right then, a good friend of mine has a problem. He's looking for a bit of advice of what to do with the situation mentioned below. Its for his old man.
"The police smashed his door down because some random person called up saying he might be sick (or worse), He was away in ireland on holiday to return to his door smashed up and padlocked. Police are refusing to pay for the repairs etc"
Any advice what he should do. Or what rights he has on this matter?
any help appretiated
Cheers
Peter

As far as i am aware, none.
Police smashed up my sister's flat which she had rented to someone they were 'interested in' and they had to pay for a new door to the block and for the flat because it was a genuine report.
I would think your best bet would be to see if the call was malicious/wasting police time and sue him for the cost. Flip side if he had been ill then he'd be thanking them not worrying about his door.
5t.

Police had an honestly held belief that they were entering the property to save life or limb so smashing the door in was reasonable.
Might be worth speaking to the duty inspector to ask them to make a contribution to getting it fixed, nothing to lose by asking.

Its nice to know they reacted to try and help someone who may have been in need of help.
I think you should just chalk it up to one of those things and get his old man to mention his going away to neighbours so they can hopefully intervene next time.

There are ways and means to break in, using a battering ram is the most damaging.
Some one I know had the Police break into his house at 0430hrs and he didnt know until they shouted at the end of his bed.
The only damage to the property was two ten pence piece sized dents in his door frame, which are still there today.
The Police used a cordless drill attached to a small gearbox assembly to unscrew/lengthen a threaded bar, which inturn prized open the door frame enough to simply clear the lock and mortice.
Very clever, and painless.
