Default Mmm... coffee whats your preference?

Just sat writing some downloaded music to CD and fancied a cup of coffee as I'm not really a tea person.

Now I'm usually a Mr Asda own brand instant coffee, but recently a mate brought round some "Cafe Noire" as he had about 1,000 jars of the stuff. Not ground beans into a coffee machine or owt, but makes a belting cuppa with a little sugar and milk.

What are everyone elses preferences? This stuff gives you a nice smooth kick without the comedown of Pro-plus

Instant coffee is foul at best. Get yourself a cafetiere, don't cost much and then at least you can make a decent brew with ground coffee. Of course if you want to go down the espresso route then the sky's the limit.

I reckon he means a cafetiere...........of those jugs with a filter you depress into it that traps the coffee grounds beneath it but allows the liquid coffee to be above it.

An expensive way to make a cuppa though, as ground coffee is a) dearer, and b) doesn't go as far as instant.

I don't agree that ALL instants are foul, but do agree that most ground coffee is better than most instants.

Depends if you buy it leasehold or freehold. Then you need to take into account the overheads, staff costs, etc.

A cafetiere is so much cheaper.

Instant coffee is wrong.

Must be fresh and strong enough to strip tarmac off roads.

It will probably have a decent espresso / cappuccino machine already though But yeah does really depend if it's going to be profitable.

Perhaps a buying cafetiere may be a better route to good coffee

Gold Blend, and Blend 37 used to be OK, but it's got poor recently. They have some interesting special blends.

No bitterness, an aroma that makes instant coffee smell like cat sick in comparison, the ability to choose your strength of coffee (from mild to strong), the ability to not look like a council house reject, etc, etc.

You can get a decent cafetiere from Tescos for about £5. The coffee itself is similar in cost.

Sounds like a good description of the serving of ground coffee in the average bar or restaurant Spain. With the exception that no matter how you order it, it is so strong that it will slap you across the face, wrestle you to the ground and run off with your wife (then give the s**ts if you dare to consume more than several cups).

And either way you won't look like council house reject; as they are all in Benidorm having a pint of lager with their breakfast

If anyone can f*** up making a nice cup of coffee, its the Spanish

Italy and Portugal on the other hand very rarely get it wrong!

France is a bit hit or miss but when they get it right, they get it very right.

Americans make the nastiest, most watery phlegm pile of a cup of coffee known to man. The proliferation of chains such as Starbucks is a true testament to the power of aggressive marketing over product quality.

I have Kenco instant at work and Sainsbury's own brand "Gold" at home. Don't mind instant at all, in fact I drink quite a lot of it. That's not to say I am against filter and posh coffee, I love it, but instant has its place.

I hardly ever drink tea....

Agree there, I can't remember the name of it, but near Primark in Meadowhall there is a coffee shop. I had a supposedly fresh cup made up recently (about £4.50 worth) and it was the stodgiest weakest cup I've had for a long time. I don't know a lot about coffee and its variations, but it put me off the "fresh" coffee idea, hense my question today and my current preference for instant coffee, Mattias

It a case of all the gear and no idea. Well, for the Spanish it is (and no doubt the American cafe chains, but I wouldn't know, I only drink hot chocolate from them ); they have the beans, and proper machines. But they still can't get it right.

Does anyone else dislike that tangy coffee - something I noticed about the "own brands" in particular?

I like my coffee strongish but not enough to give you gut rot or "rock poo's". I like it between the tangy and bitter taste if that makes sense, without the manky after tastes.
