introducing a kitten to a house with a dog.
its been interesting upto now.
anyone got any tips to introducing a kitten to a dog without blood being lost.
the dog likes cats but the cat seems to have an in-built anti dog scanner. my 11 stone rottie is scared of it lol.
any help appreciated.

Having a 11 stone Dogue de Bordueax we were very worried about bringing a tiny kitten int the house,we eased them together and now look about a month later

at first we held the kitten and let the dog sniff about a bit did this a few times a day for a few weeks,then put them together on the floor but never took our eyes off them,think the dog just needs to get used to the smells & the obvious fuss the kitten gets,we never left the dog out.If the kitten got fuss so then did the dog,they have realy bonded now

we have done the sniff thing but the cat freaks out and spits and hisses and scratches like a nutter. im covered in scratches. the dog licked the cat all over and bathed it but as soon as the cat saw he was being licked by the huge dog it flipped again. not sure what to do.

It will settle, don 't worry. The cat just needs to build up its confidence with the dog. Don't keep forcing the cat to interact with the dog (i.e. holding it as the cat need to be able to retreat and build up its confidence gradually). From what you're saying, the dog seems to view it as a pup and is unlikely to spontaneously show agression unless the cat hurts it. If you leave them in the room together supervised, you'll notice over time that the cat will gradually let the dog get closer and closer before protesting and eventually will be happy sharing space with it. Lots of reinforcment when either/both of them make progress is the key.
Animals have their own way of establishing boundaries and bonding.
The big problem comes if you have a dog that is agressive to the cat from the outset.

If you are covered in scratches it sounds like you are holding the kitten when they are interacting.
let the cat go to Ty in its own time. Ty will be naturally curious and sounds quite paternal. If anything hold Ty and let the cat come to him without feeling overpowered. Ty won't mind, and the cat will become the dominant one anyway.
Try and stop Ty licking the cat for now when they interact. If they get on ok, separate them for a bit and repeat. Once that cat knows its safe, they'll be fine together. If the cat keeps feeling threatened, it will take longer.

I have two Siamese cats and had to introduce the dog. What a carry on.
To be honest, it's great now. Cats are still in charge and dog is happy with that. He still tries to overstep the mark now and then and gets a swipe on the hooter for it. But all is good and they just accept each other.
Devildog is spot on. I just let them get on with it themselves. Obviously in range, just in case anything happened. It didn't. Took them a couple of weeks.

currently trying to do the same thing with our rabbit and cat.
we quite often let mikey (rabbit) run round the downstairs, but now we hav a cat we've tried to keep them apart we finnaly decided to see what they do when together.
first atempt me sat with mikey just in case, and in walks charlie (cat), instant vibrating rabbit (aww bless and o er at the same time) and cat 'wtf is that!' looking at him.
done that a couple of times now and we've had a nose to nose sniff off and mikeys relaxed and just hops around sniffing, charlie seems to also have clamed down and whiles still curious doesn't seem to fussed either.

These two were made for each other;
The dog has an insatiable need to stick her nose into anything & everything, and the cat is a natural born wind up merchant
There was plenty of hissing, spitting & bleeding when we first got the dog, but she soon learned who the boss was
In the mean time, this little fella;
tends to just wander round the house doing his own thing. I think because he couldn't give a toss about the dog (his entire world revolves around eating & sleeping), the dog doesn't bother with him
