Sky News has reported it as a A330 - Same type as the Air France aircraft.
Airbus now have a major issue with this aircraft - 2 falling out of the sky within a month, not unlike the air frame failures of the comet during the 50's . A fundamental flaw was revealed in the Comet when destructive testing was conducted . Airbus need to do the same with the A330.

Indeed, I seem to recall a documentary which brought the safety of the 737 into disrepute, arguing that there were a number of crashes that went as "unexplained" as as aircrashes ever can be. Some were suggesting that there was a fundamental problem with the design of the 737.

Sorry I can't be more specific...I'm sure one of the fligh buffs will know more.

These things still need to be kept in context though: air crashes are statistically very, very, very uncommon and you're much likely to meet your maker doing much more mundane things..... I wouldn't cancel your summer hols just yet!

Regardless of the above, it is very sad when this happens though; condolences to those affected.

Spot on Nat.

Most aircraft have design flaws, that get resolved over time. I seem to remember DC-10's had a slight engine issue many moons ago!

Also, there are probably more 737's variants in service than any other pax airliner, with more take off and landings than your long haul aircraft so stands to reason there would be more accidents (other than the reasons Nat21 specified above), especially when so many of the older ones are fling around the sub continent and not being as well maintained.

Some of our staff in India will fly to DXB on EK and then back into India and Pakistan on EK rather than chance it on a local airline !!

What, like they fell off, you mean?

That might qualify as a slight engine issue from where you sit, but as a pilot I see any issue, however minor, that sees my engines land before I do as quite significant!

PS Joking aside, condolences to anyone who may have been affected by this latest incident.

I was at BKK and needed to go to Phuket in Sep 07. If i'd gone with the cheapest airline (1-2-go) i'd have been on the MD90 that crashed in a fireball at Phuket. Luckily i saw the state of 1-2-go's planes on the ground at BKK and paid more to fly on a brand new Air Asia Airbus which was the next flight to leave.....which was then canceled so i got to spend a night in BKK airport which was awful but wasn't burned to death in a crap old McDonnel Douglas which was nice
Good story Nat.

It's for that exact reason I wont fly with numerous airlines.

Funnily enough, I have a mate that works for Airbus making the wings and he won't fly on them because "they're built by scousers and sheep ********".

Didn't the DC 10 tend to get seized flying controls if the cargo door failed and the floor collapsed onto the control runs. Maybe you know Flightman.

I tend to agree with Nat, we don't know why it crashed yet and it could have been due to poor servicing with a few short cuts and a well used aircraft. Or even crew error in some way. I would also be a bit choosy about the airline I flew with.

Don't read this thread if you're about to cross the Atlantic.

Bob, not concerned in the slightest, honest guv!

Oh, interesting fact time. I was in an air museum here in San Francisco yesterday, they have a nose off a 737. It has more take off and landing cycles on it than flying hours. There was some other guff about 737s being chuffin great but I can't remember it!

The A310 was only the 13th safest airliner (of 19) prior to this accident, so not a great record. This is in terms of the number of deaths per flying hours.

AirDisaster.Com: Statistics

It would appear from these stats that Boeing do have a better safety record than Airbus with 4 of the 6 safest planes being Boeing - and none of them Airbus.

I'm sure I've read however that if you look at only aircraft built in the last 10 years then Airbus are safer than Boeing on average, but can't find the stats.

The Airbus A310 MSN 535 was run buy an airline (Yemeni) that is not allowed to fly european airports. Due to it's safety and maintenance standards not meeting European Aviation standards (EASA)

There is no indication as yet as to the cause of the crash and as with the Air France A330, I find it very anoying when these so called experts on the tv and press (who mostly know nothing) speculate as to the cause.

I personally have no problems getting on an aircraft. As it is the safest way to fly.
