Great that we have one of our own but he will be nearly 41 befroe he gets to go into orbit, surely that is knocking on the door of being a tad old for an astronaut.

No it is not too old at all. In fact the US preferred its astronauts to be around that age since they thought people tend to be more stable in their approach to the job or to emergencies. They also valued the added experience at simply being in that kind of a job in general.
