I remember going to the trade days at the Farnborough Airshow 4 years ago. There was a development plane MiG-29M with the vectored thrust due later on the MiG-35. It made every other jet fighter on display look as manoeuvrable as a Jumbo Jet! And that included the likes of Typhoon, F18, Gripen, F16 et al.

I wonder what all those assembled Western aerospace Bigwigs and Airforce Generals were thinking!

PS: I like the chaff-style pyrotechnics at the end.

I enjoyed all of that. Some outstanding flying there. I wou;d love to get my hands on aircraft that can handle like that, including the aerobatic machines early on.

Nice touch shooting off the infra red decoys too.

Enjoyed all of that.

Why do all Russian pilots look like toilet attendants?

They also give the impression they dont give a ****, like they have just thrown on something warm and scruffy to go and walk the dogs.

Not one posh watch between them, bring on the Breitling ponces.....

Do you have a link to those pics by any chance?

And yes, single engine is never good...but well, its still the best at what it does

Sorry, but I feel the need to say that it wasn't engine failure, despite what the Sun said!

However, the photos were impressive. Apparently, there is a video, but I don't think it will be made public for a while at least.

In the words of the Fast Show, "That's amazing!"

It'd be awesome to see what the Red Arrows could do with kit like that

During last years USAF deployment to India, the USAF F-15s lost EVERY single encounter versus the IAF SU-30 MKIs..........

Ok the F-15 is not the most amazingly nimble thing about, and it was all visual air-to-air, but still.............

The vectoring thrust, combined with the helmet mounted sight, is lethal!

Good footage:

It does not need me to say how good the Arrows really are at such precise formation flying. The Hawk is reasonable for the job but not in the same league as the Folland Gnat when they were using that. It was very much easier from the point of longitudinal control since the Gnat was much more sensitive to throttle movement. It you closed the throttle with the Gnat it would slow down much more quickly while with the Hawk it takes a bit longer to slow down so you have to anticipate the required throttle movement that much earlier. Lateral control was similar.

I won a huge in-flight signed & framed photo of the Red Arrows team from the Gnat era (a season or two before they changed to Hawks, so it must have been late 1970's). I was about 6 or 7 and won it (and a flight in a Cessna over Leicester) for a Department store colouring-in competition. I wonder what that photo's worth now?

Sadly I peaked too soon and my talent with all things artistic has not improved over the last 30-odd years.
