Default Buying from e-bay, what's the catch?

Looking at a new camera body, brand new, locally, around £1200, same if I travel 50 miles or so. Pricerunner has it at over £1000 plus hefty P&P

I can source a brand new one off e-bay, UK model in a sealed box, £925, delivered.

IS there a catch? If so, what is it?

TIA

As they say "You pays your money, you takes your chances"

I would ask myself;
Is it a reputable seller, one you know or is well known?
Is it really genuine UK kit?
What recourse have i got, knowing the horror stories about Fleabay and PP?

I am not too sure it is a big enough difference in cost to warrant the risk, because risk is what it is. I would also 'Kelkoo' it to see what other prices are from companies and compare

There's almost always a catch with Ebay, but then again it could simply be a bargain.
Try asking the seller why there's a huge difference in price compared to others you've seen.

I buy nothing off Ebay now.

Everyone I know who has used it regularly has been ripped off somewhere down the line. I've used it twice, years ago. But I think there are too many con-men on there now.

Pay by credit card then your covered. Have they got contact details ask if you can collect as it is a expensive item.

I have a eBay score of 200 buying and selling and never had a problem

Try to get an idea of who you are dealing with ie some email dialogue, be guided by your instincts, anything doesn't add up walk away.
Also as above; see if you can collect, this tends to scare off crooks.

Link to it?

It could be a fake, or simply for sale from a seller with no overheads other than ebay fees. Or, at worst, a scam.

And dont think if you pay via paypal you will be covered............ because they usually have some "get out clause" that they throw at you, bastids.

As others have said see if you can go look at it/pick it up if it's not too far away. Is the seller a shop/outlet of some description or a private seller so to speak i.e. have they got a receipt of proof of purchase?

There is a guy known on here, who I can't actually remember who he is at the moment , but he sells all sorts of brand new camera equipment. I got a £360 lens from him, good service and cheaper than anywhere else.

Might be worth while putting a post in the Photography forum on here as someone is bound to know his name, I will try and find it.

..... ah found him, he is known as 'kerso' and can be found on here - http://photography-on-the.net/forum/index.php

£925 for a £1200 item is probably about right. It's when you see the thing for half price that you smell a rat.

Check out the obvious and try and speak to the seller. Use a credit card and grab yourself a bargain!

I bought my bugeye off ebay - although the seller only lived 10 mins up the road so I don't suppose it's quite the same scenario is it really? Best thing I ever bought on ebay though! Like antc I also have over 200+ rating on ebay and I have never had any negative feedback, but was scammed once in the early years of ebay - it was a big learning curve with regards to ebay and online purchasing but it didn't put me off - just be careful! Pay by credit card if you can as you will be covered for anything over £100.
