Default What scientific breakthroughs do you foresee in the next 50 years?

How different do you think our lives will be in 50 years time, if your an old ****** then your kids

For example - Do you think we will have completely clean and renewable energy production?

Space travel for the masses - to somewhere actually worth going to?

etc

What do you see happening?

hhhmmm, Good question.
I think the internet is in its infancy, I think land reclaiming will become a lot more popular, They will have a cure for swine flu and bob Geldof will still be dining out on "I dont like Mondays"
oh and maybe brain transplants!!

Space travel may make little progress given that the last time a human visited the Moon was the early 1970s.

Genetics will be a big one I think with replacement organs manufactured to order and cures for many degenerative conditions and malignancies, plus better drugs designed and tested through genetic advances.

Hopefully we can sort out world population using existing birth control, reduce political instability and invest in clean energy and productive industry.

Hard to say, we always prefer to stick with what we know and understand. I think that comparing the advances of the last 50 years, we can expect some pretty amazing things to happen, provided that the earth's remaining reserves don't restrict what can be done.

Seems to me that most restrictions are due to power, if and hopefully when we make a breakthrough in that area, it should open up endless possibilities.

Various body parts and organs will be replaceable thanks to stem cell research this includes teeth but eyes and other complicated parts might not be so fortunate.
The paralysed will walk again thanks to new nerve fibres that can be created.
The internet will carry n as always but under tighter controls, maybe some sort of war happens with the controls government try to put into place, people arrested for inciting cyber terror.

All cars will be electric and instantly rechargeable, more homes will have solar/wind power plus heated water and heating coming from underground boreholes where water is channelled through.

Some form of superfast jet transport using hyper scram jet or possibly pulse detonation engines capable of mach 25+, london to la in less than 1 hour.

Mass worldwide underground rail network providing 500+mph speeds to most major capital cities in the world.

Phones with inbuilt low power lasers to transmit display direct to the optic nerve centre.
Computers will become more integrated with daily life, each person having a neural implant to control devices at will whether it be cooking or driving a car.

Cars to become fully automated.

God i could go on forever but i have to nip out, be back with more insights later.

cookie,
that what they said about scoobies now look at them. advances in concave mirrors. if you could get a 3ft one and if you could stand in the middle of it naked without it breaking, you would get breath taking views of uranus.

Would be nice to think that they could make progress and cure the likes of Aids and Cancer - how cancer develops is a massive mystery - both my mother and grandmother developed breast cancer and now my brother-in-law has bowel cancer. Can't understand it at all - one minute they're living really healthy happy lives and then out of the blue along comes cancer. All 3 have been relieved of the illness but not without extensive therapy, so yeah, I'd like to think that there'll be significant progress made in understanding these things in the next fifty years.

They can, i believe they can use blood plasma or spinal fluid, don't quote me on it as it's from my very grey memory.

I'ts less effective but with technology it's becoming a better alternative.

Have a look for kstar or plasma arc reactors if you want the future.

Evolutionarily older monkeys produced this protein called retrocylin. It blocks the entry of the HIV virus into cells. The team found the gene that produced this protein in humans, albeit disabled along some evolutionary route. (Also more proof we are evolved from primates, you creationist crazies)

In general terms I can see:

Controllable fusion reactors (I hope!)
Massive increases in battery storage capacities and lowered recharge times through fuel cell research

Both will be driven by fossil fuels becoming uneconomic and the requirement for power and personal transport staying the same

Batteries are half way there, lithium-iron phosphate batteries can charge in under 20 minutes compared to several hours of li-ion, have 2000 cycles opposed to 500 but have slightly less capacity and voltage they are much lighter so you can throw more in to compensate, i can imagine graphene batteries to be the next significant leap.

Lithium iron phosphate battery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gizmodo - Graphene Could Become World's Best Super Battery - Super material

In the meantime nickel-zinc batteries are on the way and offer 30% more than lithium.

Interesting times are ahead.......

The Fusion reactor would be a nice start.
Without that I can't see a move into space exploration. The tech. is already in research labs for FTL travel, but at the moment there is no way to power it.

Strange no one has mentioned A.I. because I can see that becoming common place in the next 10-15 years.

its the most abundant element in the universe. the hydrogen to helium reaction process by fusion is the most energy efficient process and liberates the most energy of any reaction. that's why stars do it.

see Hydrogen Vehicles

it makes some interesting reading. the technology is here just needs some major tweaking and we could cut carbon emmissions almost entirely by using hydrogen as an energy source.

wouldn't mind having the patent on that technology.

Once the LHC has had a few years running we can probably expect answers to A Grand Unified Theory, Dark Matter, String theory, Supersymmetry, Supergravity
Quantum gravity etc

I watched The Gadget Show the other night and they showed wireless charging and powering of electrical items, so:

If all cars are going to be electric I presume as we don't all have garages that we'll be charging our cars wirelessly instead of having extension leads all over the pavements.
If this is the case, will people be out in the streetsl putting their mobile phones and other rechargeable equipment in the flow getting free (to them at least) electricity?

LOL, dream on!! I'll happily put £50 down against that happening or anything close to it happening within 50 years. I'm 30 now so have reasonable odds of being good for it I guess. If you take the bet we adjust £50 for inflation at the time

see you back here in 50 years
