I've got an African Grey, had him 5 years now.
He's great fun wouldn't be without him, although I left him with my mum when I moved out 4 years ago as she became so attached to him.
They do require a lot of attention, can't be left for long periods of time or they get bored and go into self destruct mode normally pulling out feathers and sulking.
They also require a great deal of consideration as they live for years!
Cages are expensive, as are the birds if they fly out a window in the summer! maybe an idea to have its wings clipped they do need a big cage with lots of toys, they also love to come out and have a walk round exploring.
With care and the attention they demand they are like an additional member of the family. Mine barks, whistles, makes telephone noises, microwave beeps, sings bar bar black sheep, and dances to disco music!
If you need any more info drop me an email.
Cheers
John
edited to say, £400 is a VERY good price, get the bird checked by a parrot expert before buying, they are virtually impossible to sex aswell so you will probably never know what it is....unless it lays an egg I guess

Parrots are incredibly demanding pets, need enormous amounts of attention and can become quite psychotic if they don't get it.

Cheers mega_stream !
You confirm what I thought - not a situation to be entered into lightly but extremely rewarding if you're prepared for the committment
I'm going to do a bit more research (web, library and local group). I might well take you up on the offer of more views via email in due course.
Cheers again
