Question Hi-Fi speaker connections.

At the moemnt I have my speakers b-wired with QED silver anniversary cable.
The cables are connected at the speaker end by gold plated banana plugs. (The amp end is in special plugs for Cyrus power amps).

TBH, they don't FEEL very secure. Would I be better pushing the cable ends into the holes in the speaker terminals, then tightening the knurled nut down on them, or will it make no difference?

The $64,000 dollar question has to be: What does it sound like now?

IF you think it sounds poor try changing it around, if not leave as is and enjoy!

If in doubt...solder them directly to the crossover PCB inside the speaker - presuming it has one, decent speakers will (also, whilst rummaging round in the glass-fibre wool you can marvel at how naff the cabling inside the speaker is ).

Been there, done that

I got some VERY strange effects when trying to wire the thing up for bi-amped, bi-wired, one amp doing treble, the other doing bass

Things are "supposed" to sound better when there is no corrosion around to muddy the signal.

Crimp connectors are supposed to be "best". But if you have screw on or screw down connectors, try silicone grease on the freshly cut ends before you make the connections and screw down the terminals.

Other uses for silicone grease

You will hear no difference at all. As for soldering the wires, why on earth would you do that???
Banana plugs, spade connectors etc are just for convenience really, especially if you are often changing things around

I used to love this! Back in the day of working for Richer Sounds i would have sold Gale symphony 400 with TDL Studio 10's for all the base heads knowing fine rightly that the drivers were all wired using bellwire

Only pair of speakers i own that i'm confident that uses a good grade of cable inside is my Monitor Audio Gold Ref.10's. My Silver 6's have some copper pish in them and i just haven't be arsed to ever change them.

As for speaker cable terminations, biggest con EVER.

Soldered connections are always the best ones.

Sorry but soldering speaker connections is utter nonsense. There is no need and you will hear no difference in sound quality. Utter tosh I'm afraid
