Bit of advice, make sure you add some money for a decent sight as shooting with open sights is a skill in its own right. A decent air rifle and scope should be available for around £100 to £150. There are cheaper ones, but in my experience they arent much cop. Also factor in a silencer as well, if your neightbours are owt like mine the nosey b*stards will be out each time they hear it fire.
My advice would be to find your local store and go pay them a visit. During the week is usually better as they'll have more time to spend with you. You want something which is easy to pick up, ie: not too heavy and something which feels comfy. Also you need to check if you can **** it as some require a bit of brute strength to arm it, my wife cant pull the barrel on my weihrauch HW85.
Once bought, gun oil and regular cleaning will keep it in good working order and get plenty of practise.
.177 will give a flatter trajectory and is easier to shoot with for an amateur
.22 will stop things better but the pellet wont fly in a straight line
Legal limit is 12ft/lbs, anything higher requires a fire arms license.

Sara, in all seriousness, unless your 100% prepared to kill something and know 100% what your doing. Don't do it.
The last thing you want to do is cause suffering, which you will if you get it slightly wrong.
There was an offer in the other thread, I will also quite happily teach you.
As a bonus, the results are free meat, pigeon is a good source, also rabbit if they come in your garden.

On your budget your looking at a spring powered rifle ( the od break barrel style). Good makes are BSA, Air Arms, and Weirauch (sp). Factor in a scope as well.
Your 2 nearest gunshops are Park Street (in park st) and 1 in Letchworth. Now due to laws, you cannot buy rifles mail order so you will have to go to a shop to get this.

The cases' ends looked crimped like blanks to me, of you look closely at the inside of the flash eliminator i think you cna see the restrictor (Film and TV matt black hidden in barrel type), it is a sh1te pic mind so happy to be corrected

I have been looking round the net and have found a place in Berkhampstead. I know the one in Park Street, i used to work nearby. I found it mind boggling reading from the forums so i am going to go along to a shop and get first hand info.
Simon, thanks for the offer of help, if i am out of my depth i will let you know
I have read all the replys on here and have got a clearer picture of what is involved now. thanks everyone
When the fair next comes to town i will be able to win all the toys for my daughter, they wont know what hit them

Shoots bird, it doesn't die straight away.......
Are you prepared to hear it make some horrendous noises as you calmly walk over, looking at its tortured and petrified face, flapping around, trying to get away as you cool as you like reload and then lower the gun to its head and fire to finish it off in the manner of a slightly scatty female Joe Pesci ?
Or will you run inside blubbing and ask a bloke to finish your dirty work ?

Further to J4CKO's eloquent post
....... you need a cool "offing phrase" to say just before the final shot is delivered, something similar in coolness to the Terminator or Dirty Harry....
Along the lines of "Eat 1.77 Sky Rat" ......or..... "Smile Walter, it's payback time" .........
It's a must if you're in the business of dispatching things

The actual kill zone on a pigeon is actually quite small (head & neck).
If you hit anywhere else it'll most likely fly off a short distance in pain.
I recommend that you set up a range in your garden (similar to that at which you are shooting pests). Once when can reliably get 10 out of 10 shots inside a 10p piece should you even start to think about shooting beasties.
If you are going to shoot 1.77, you should get a heavy shot to give more impact. I use "exact heavy" by diablo. Tins of 500 were about £10.
