Afterburners...... I am going to be first to get in with the aviation geekness, In the uk they are Re-heaters, The US call them afterburners. But top video. I love stuff like this.

Enjoyed the videos. Did not see much urgency in the scramble though, when we scrambled we just drove it straight onto the runway and took off without stopping!
Most of the fighter pilots I knew flew as little as possible at night, just enough to remain current The bar was far more attractive!
The Lightning I flew in was quite capable of a vertical climb with the reheat off in fact-quite a machine!

I will curse you till my deathbed for you getting the chance to fly a Lightning. There are such an engineering feat. You are a very lucky man ( but I know you know just how lucky you are)

Our operational requirement was to get 4 aircraft off the ground within 2 minutes of a scramble from a cold start but with other checks already done previously. If you were No 4 you had a bit of turbulence to cope with during take off
The Eagle is a very good machine, we once saw one take off straight to the vertical until he disappeared from sight from Nellis AFB near Las Vegas. Always wanted a trip but missed out.
They had their limitations though, their look down shoot down radar could not see us at very low level at night attacking targets in the Nevada desert while we could track them with our detector kit on board. We used to throw out an infra red decoy to light up the place so that they could see us and then we would jam their radar!
