Default Torches

I usually go and buy a cheap one from B&Q, but for a change I thought I would buy something 'proper' so I got an LED Lenser P7 (£40).

Wow, it is impressive. No point to the post, apart from for once it appears spending quite a bit of money gives you very good quality.

I have a weird obsession with torches - I always want the brightest one.

A while back I went a little nuts and got one with this kind of beam:

sorry for the blur but the digital camera is hard to keep steady on night shots!

Bit naughty of lenser calling it a p7, it implies it has a p7 emitter when in reality iy chucks out 167 lumen still respectable.

I have this but in a 1 mode, it has a cree r2 xr-e emitter so the brightest single emitter atm.

DealExtreme: $22.81 Ultrafire C1 Cree R2-WC 5-Mode Memory LED Flashlight (2*CR123A/1*18650)

And this p7 about 600+ lumen i would prefer the aurora though.

DealExtreme: $36.56 MTE SSC P7 C-Bin 900-Lumen 2-Mode LED Flashlight (1*18650)

Oooh torches...

I have quite a few, my P&J being my "Black Bear" 900+ Lumen Maglight conversion which I got custom made quite a few years ago from a well known member on CP forums.

At the time it was about as bright as you could go for its size.

Now things have changed quite a bit and although the new LEDs are bright I still dont think they have the "hit" that the filiment bulb has. But - that said they come close - and are a LOT smaller, a LOT cheaper, and dont eat batts, or bulbs! I have instaflashed quite a few in my time..

My current daily use torch is a CREE conversion of a 6P Surefire. Bright enough (c.200 lumens) and is fairly small. Also have another 6P but running an IR CREE.... Shhhh.

Keep meaning to get a new one.. what next...

1. You obviously dont value quality and precision
2. You are satisfied with small amount of dark things made slightly light and very short distances

and besides who said anything about need? its always want

Indeed it is - I have two of them - one on a helmet mount (the beam is very bright but very narrow) to back up my Hope bike light (good spread of light) for night MTBing (which is great fun).

Loads of light for well under £100.

Wow, would never have thought it, that is geeky. (not having a go, just amazed at the degree of geekiness for torches)

Loved this quote:

"It fits an 18650 cell with no modification and room to spare for a DC-DC board. It tail stands and has good threads and O-ring engagement. It definitely will not remain stock for long."

He'd fit in well here!

I'm now seeing torches in a whole new light....

Do you think they have torch meets?

A gathering of torch nerds who all have a "light off" in the local woods. First to spot a target and shine their torch on it wins? Or similar?

Well, I've certainly seen some men in the parks in London. One did offer to show me something although I couldn't quite hear what as he was drooling a little, so I declined.

Perhaps I missed out ...

Sigh, cree for spot seoul for flood, i've answered lord knows how many light questions on bike radar, little do they know a seoul emitter is still a cree anyway just under a different badge.

The two i've mentioned are top dogs atm at least when it comes to size and runtimes, i find the little c1 invaluable, great runtimes and very bright the p7 is jubilee clipped onto the handlebars.

You know who to ask.

Something like this would be nice as a flood torch.

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.15739

Or if you want something brighter.

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.15686

Or something obscene.

Have a look at the c1 i posted matt, it knocks the tesco torches into touch.

i always used to break torches. used them to find my way around empty boarded up buildings etc for work. a few years ago i bought a cheap induction torch thing to see if it would be any use at all....not really! plus it probably looked a bit strange seeing a bloke in a suit walk into a boarded up building on his own shaking a torch lengthways, at crotch height....

in hong kong last year i finally managed to get to the night market and bought a couple of led dynamo torches. whilst i can see the attraction in owning a decent torch, some git would probably nick it - i think the dynamo thingies were about £1 for two, so not too concerned if they disappear

Hux - I know but I've bought them now and for £8, they rock. Any more torches and I'd qualify for using a torch forum...!
