Running around cliffs and stuff
Raced the St Just (Cornwall) coastal 10k (errmm - more like 11-12k!) and it was very very tough but managed to come 4th out of about 120. The record is 49 mins (very slow for that distance - shows how harsh the terrain is!) and the course was slightly extended this time - managed 53m53s - poor for a 10k but fine for this course!
The guy who was 3rd was way behind me and accidentally took a short cut (!) and overtook me. He was very apologetic but I reckon I should have been 3rd really!
I'm in yellow - looking moody but actually really nervous at the start!

The event was generally very well organised by Endurancelife who do six other coastal running events and off road triathlons (doing one in May) - but the course needed to be better marked as is often the case. We all went the wrong way a few times!
Sorry if anyone gets blinded by my baldy head!
Now will it be Davyboy that jumps in first with a little snipe as usual or someone else!?
If anyone fancies off road running or triathlonn stuff, I recommend Endurancelife events very highly.

Lovely day for it.
Was it very breezey being on the coast? I often find it a lot harder to run cross-country when getting blown all over the place, a lot easier to lose your footing and twist your ankle.

Nat - I was very glad I had pretty hardcore shoes (Inov8s) because it was very rocky and loads of loose stones about - as well as stiles (mostly granite) that needed quite a leap to clear.
Was quite windy but I found it quite refreshing.
A few did twist their ankles though.

Not my dad - he's balder (hence my "condition") and porkier than that bloke!
dpb - errrmmm- used to cliff jump a lot (into the sea) when I was younger. Great fun unless you hit the bottom.

I did manage a couple of recovery pints after the run.
Very important part of any training programme...!
If any of you are into golf (I'm not), the course around that run (it started from the club house) is stunning. On a par (boom boom!) with St Enodoc.

Well done.
I would be proud of myself if I walked that course.
Ive never been into anything Cardio, but lie me down on a bench and I will press 3 sets of six with 125Kgs, with a little sleep in between..
I must say, I have never seen a fell/cliff/long distance runner who looks healthy, they all look ill to me, thin/gaunt/wirey people, each to their own...

Wow! my hat goes off to you. I've walked that part of the coast lots of times having spent months living in that part of Cornwall and its difficult in some places to walk, let alone run, especially near Levant mine. Not exactly a flat path!

I saw very few super skinny runners - you are thinking of road runners. Fell/trail runners need a bit of strength to hoof up hills.
I did the weights only, very little cardio for many years - yes I was chunkier but surfing suffered, I was slower and not nearly as fit. Would rather be like a middleweight boxer (which is the weight I am) than an overweight "thug" - having got a little bit bulky, apart from looking a bit scarier, it didn't really have any benefits and I found less weight much better when kickboxing. Still, 3 x 6 at 125kg bench is amazing. In my days of weights I had to use machines for benching (slightly dodgy shoulder) - last set was 6 x 125kg, best single lift was 150kg BUT I know it's a lot less than the free weight equivalent.
mykp - it was a bit harsh. One hill really did me in - felt dizzy for a while!

I walked St Ives to Falmouth last year and although I had my wife doing support I was out for 2 days at a time and had to be at certain places at certain times to meet her. Worst sections where Cape Cornwall to Mousehole and Marazion to Coverack because of the downs and ups. I've walked it before but this time I had a dog in tow and was carrying a 20kg backpack (tent for me, food for 2, sleeping bag, stove and the killer water!). took me a week and another week to recover Planning on doing hadrians wall later in the year.

Not a bad time Matt, especially looking at the terrain there. It looks like you had a really good day for it too.
I guess with Dartmoor on your doorstep for training this was easy
Chris and I came 3rd in class in our last adventure race - only a little 5 hour blat around the New Forest where we were treated to sunshine, and then a headwind, and then a hailstorm. We did about 50k off-road mtb followed by a 10k trail run.

SJ - tbh the time is a bit cack but am waiting for the "official" distance - due to be posted up today. A few reckon it was at least 11k.
Usually get sub 7.5 minute miles on rough terrain and sub 7 minute miles when it's a bit gentler - best in a race (trail but no obstacles) was 6.5 min miles. If this was 10k, I got rather embarrassing 8.5 minute miles! Some of it was near rock scrambling though.
Cool on the adventure race! Hoping to do okay on this offroad tri in May but it's my first so will probably be dire.

I prefer 8 to 8.5 minute miles as it's a recovery pace for me so I can keep banging them out one after another. 7.5 and under is just silly
Good luck with your tri - I did an offroad duathlon a couple of years ago at Coed-y-Brenin, a 5k run, 20k mtb, 5k run. I trained the distance easily in the gym, doing it in under 90 minutes several times in the run up to the race. Sadly I didn't factor terrain into my training and the 500m climb on the mtb course was akin to cycling halfway up snowdon and back down again. 2 hours and 45 minutes, a world of cramp in places I didn't know could cramp and 8th last!

SJ - just checked. It was 11.5km/7.2 miles so just under 7.5 minute miles - phew!!
Similar to me with training - I had done several coast runs of the right distance (and further) in training but the initial pace was very quick and at about 6km, I felt slightly like dying! Mega stitch, dizzy, etc. Then it lifted and got a second wind.

I love walking those cliff paths, but you can sod running them Good on yer, but as my Grandad always said, only run if you're being chased and you know you can't have them

Respect for running on that terrain. We have had a few holidays in St. Just and the campsite at Treen (windy!) so know the cliff paths. Would love to ride it on the MTB but no way could I run it!

Tim - I was okay(ish) at drinking in my late teens/early 20s but am now utterly hopeless. So yes, if you can drink more than two pints without feeling properly drunk and can drink more than about 5 in total, you'd win!
Marin - there a Treen on the North and South Coast. I once drove to the wrong one and couldn't understand why I didn't recognise any of it! The other Treen (the one I meant to go to) is about 40 mins drive away - oops!
