Default What discount on a new car??

Going to place an order inside the next month for a car.

Price negotiations start on monday, what sort of discount would you expect to get on a new car straight out the showroom? (list price is 20k)

Problem I see, is there are 0 on the second hand market as its that new a model.

Parkers target is 500 off and autobytel offering nothing so looks like slim pickings.

Discounts on new models (especially diesels) may be ambitious.

But hey there's a credit crunch on - and if you don't ask you don't get.

I'd start by looking for 2k off the price - Alternatively ring round dealers / brokers and get them to find the best deals.

Have used Broadspeed.com in the past and made big savings.

I placed a factory order for a new Fiesta Zetec-S in October last year.

It should have been £14500 with all the extras I had on it, but I got it for under £11050 and it took about 7 weeks for it to be built and delivered.

I was told by my local merc dealer that there is no discounts. Went to look at an E320cdi (42k with extras) and they wanted me to pay list, asked them if they would give me a good price for my trade in, to which he offered me less than book (told "hard to sell", but has the same model on the forecourt for double what he's offering me but mines in better condition, more options, half the milage!)

I sometime wonder if they actually want to sell cars!?!

Try this, I was going to buy a new WRX last year, I went into Proven Subaru asked for a deal when he offered some extras I phoned Guildford Subaru there and then in the show room and asked if they could do better.
I relayed the message out loud to my girlfriend and the sales guy.

As it turns out no one was doing a very good deal so I put the money aside and will get a second hand 330s when they arrive on the used market. But it was fun and almost worked.

I'd be very surprised if you got a discount off an Impreza diesel mainly due to availability.

The car has not yet been officially launched, dealers have each been given only around 2 car's, if they sell these now they won't be able to replace them until the end of the year so they will be holding out for the list price.

drivethedeal.com is quite a good place to start. Most dealers find it hard pushed to match the price on there.

If it isn't a very common car (Impreza WRX STI for example) then you get very little discount.

Would'nt thought you'd get much of a deal as Impreza diesel is in short supply due to IM not importing many due to poor exchange rate.
Do what I've done and get a Legacy diesel, there's a few around the dealers with low miles.

Mats are in, as is the cargo tray in the boot.

Might try and call their bluff depending on tonights chat with the parents (its outside my budget).

They can have the card details on the phone call for the deposit, if they knock £500 off.

Simon, why do you want to buy an Impreza Diesel, when it is by your own admission out of your price range? If it has to be a 5 door diesel hatchback, why not go and find a Golf GTTdi or similar Focus, even a brand new VW is less than the Impreza isn't it?

Matt, its a car I'm 100% happy with, and as I'm keeping it for 10 years, that is a major factor.

Oh and its not out of my price range now , just had to take a route I didn't want to do (sold my shares back to work).

As for golfs, they don't do a AWD, and as for focus's, ewwwwww and ewwwwww, I took works out once, I refuse to drive it now, I hate them.

If it's AWD you want, Audi do a A3 TDI Quattro.

Know which one I'd rather own.

Drove the Audi (both 150 and 170ps versions), IMHO the scoob is the better car...

Audi wins the looks contest though.

You are going to spend 20k on a new car, but keep it for 10 years? Why not spend 10k and keep it for 5 etc Whats the logic behind this?

That doesn't concern me, just that I got a cracking deal. Next time I want a new car, i'll go back to them as I got such a good deal and will be asking for the same again. If they want my repeat business then that's how they'll get it.
