Default Pleasant way of getting to a pub

Was wife's birthday yesterday. Got the baby looked after and went to the pub for a cosy pint.

Nice!

YouTube - Salcombe Flyer

I'm sure the usuals will find some reason to have a pop.

Well not usually for drinking "one" pint. And wife drove anyway - she had a half.

It's a cheap boat - probably costs less than golf membership of a decent club.

You could say the same for anyone that posts a pic of their cars.

Anyway, no traffic, lovely blue skies and we got there in less than half the time it would have taken to get there by car. And it started first time after no being used for a few months. Splendid.

Chill, I wasnt suggesting you was drunk in charge of a boat.... Although it was a serious question.

Dave - some guy ran another boat over a little while ago when drunk near Falmouth. It was dark, he was very beered up, he had no proper lights, someone died. I think he got imprisoned for it but not sure.

You don't need any sort of license here - you see young teens driving daddies powerboat at silly speeds. TBH, I'd prefer a license system. To many are too dangerous and stupid. We've grown up with boats and wife has done a load of courses (for when she was a watersky instructor) so hopefully we have a good idea of being safe.

You'd be very unlucky to get done if you don't crash though. Obviously you don't want to drink much and drive but a nice cold can of beer on the beach/anchored up or a pint at the pub is fine. And absolutely lovely.

It's our one luxury and we love it.

nice one

this must be the best time of year in Cornwall -- the dark days are over and no crowds

Cornwall gets pretty hellish in the summer

Hodgy - again that's where a boat comes in handy. There is always a quiet beach or stretch of water accessible by boat only , even in August bank holiday!

can it pull a mono ski?

the dingy I used to potter about in had an old seagull -- never really going to cut it as a water ski boat!!!!

Quite easily - can deep water start a mono fine. The boat does move about a bit (side to side) if you really fling yourself across the wake though!

Our old boat was a 17ft Cornish Crabbers Coble (gaff rigged sailing dinghy) with sails and a 2hp engine. We got bored of spending over an hour just getting to open water so changed it for the speed boat. Plus we are cr4p at sailing! It was a pretty boat though.

well, you really know how to treat the missus.....

take her out for her birthday, but only allow her to have half a pint cos she's got to drive you home!!!

Seriously though, it looked a cracking day for it - nothing like getting away from the madding crowds, fresh air, blue skies, open water - what more could you want?

Dave,
I don't know about the UK, but I know over here you can indeed get done for being drunk whilst operating a boat, regardless of wether it's power or sail. They even have random checkpoints and pull people over, quite amusing to see someone have a copper on a jetski pop alongside and then usher them over to the edge of the channel where to moor up where there is a waiting team of coppers.

Don't forget a lifejacket for the hound, and no, I'm not taking the pish. Ours has one and if it gets a bit rough then we pop it on her.

Markus - we avoid rough conditions. The boat doesn't really get on with them. Plus she's basically a seal with ears...

@ the seal with ears

Ours is more like a fat white otter, if we had a boat like that she'd be over the side before you could blink

More or less - yes.

But then so are Boston Whalers - about the best small speedboats you can buy.

Open hulled boats are very practical, often light and pretty bombproof. A lot ot sleek looking boats are a pain in the butt to look after and use.

Bravo - does 40 knots in the right conditions. I don't believe that but it's got the biggest engine allowed and the previous owners (who are friends of ours) did a speed test with a decent GPS system. However fast it really is, it's plenty fast enough. :-)

Great way of getting to the pub, do you live on the sea or do you have to put on a trailer etc and launch her somewhere?

Chopper - we live here (behind where the pic was taken)

The river Fal is about 30 yards from the house and the boat in on a pontoon mooring about 150 yards away. We just take the cover off, take off the ropes, start up and off we go.

Open sea is about 5 miles down river.

Easy peasy!

Looked like a good day out Matteeboy, your dog was enjoying it by the looks of it too.

I am a bit further east up the coast and second what you say about some of the maniacal boating fellows.

My very old Shetland rides the waves pretty well-good hull design and I am looking forward to my fishing for Bass soon.

I know the Area well, I do miss it, I used the boat to do the pub run from the studio to Fowey or Golant, was a great way to de stress.
