Watching the news on BBC this morning before I left for work. Article on about the reduction of NSL to 50mph with a guy who had sadly lost his daughter on a country road late at night.

The interviewer asked if he felt that a 50mph speed limit would help, but jeez I had to laugh at the guy. He explained the circumstances that his daughter and up to ten of her friends were coming home from a night outr walking down a country lane, when a van hit her doing over 70mph (according to eyewitnesses).

My first reaction was what was she doing walking home down a country road at that time of night in the dark, but it got better. So when asked if he felt 50mph would help, he explained that although the driver was found to be high on a cocktail of ecstasy and cannabis, a50mph limit would have definitely helped. WTF?

Then in the paper, I'm reading about a guy who is taking MI5/6 to court because he was turned down for a mobile surveillance role. The guy is part paralysed

I watched that this morning and thought the same thing. When the interviewer asked if a 50mph limit would have had any effect considering he was already doing well over 70mph, he gave some rambling answer about how it would have made a difference.

Councils already have the power to impose speed restrictions on roads deemed dangerous, why the need for a blanket law on all roads? We just need some common sense to be used here!

In the "good old days", councils did use common sense and they also understood that they were there to serve the public to the best of their ability. Present day PC Plonkers have a very different view unfortunately.

Had his daughter been drinking? Was she walking on the right (thus facing oncoming traffic)? Was she wearing high visibility clothing?

Or was it just the fact that the stoned driver was doing more than 50mph?

It is not bizarre, it is scary!!

I think you'll find the NSL for a van is 50mph already on an A road, just to make the story even less relevant.

sounds like something from a jeremy kyle "performance" unfortunately - poorly researched sensationalism which, when analysed, doesn;t really relate to the end cause at all
