£100 tax fine...........
We did my wife's tax online, it told us THEY owed US £76.
Today, we got a fine of £100 for doing it late.
Wife phones up, asks why, points ou they shouldn't fine us if THEY owe US, and guess what?
They have no record of our filing online
Now WE have to prove we did.
What the **** happened to innocent until PROVEN guilty in Lying Labour's Britain? :mad :

i wouldn't worry about the fine, do the return again and as long as they owe you money you will get the fine back/credited with any iterest due which at the moment is **** all.
HTH.

P.S i would get an accountant to have a look a good one that knows all the loop wholes will prob get you more. Mine charges £100.

You are automatically emailed a submission reference (combination of about 29 letters & numbers) once you have filed your return.
If you filed sucessfully it will show within your Government Gateway SA account.
Log on & look at your previous years returns; under 2007 / 08 it will either show a submission date (if sucessful) or that it is overdue if it never went through.
Without the submission reference you will have a hard job proving you did it if it is not showing on their system. Also, ALWAYS take a print out - just in case!!
The £100 will be reduced to nil if they owe you, but I would recomend doing it asap to avoid agro.

dont trust the online system especially if your doing your return close to the cut off date. Three of my customers are accountants and they all curse the online tax return system as they reccon its full of bugs and problems - the classic is the session time out which ends your return if you take to long. I know this because if it screws up they phone me!?

Are you sure you submitted it after filling it in?
Do mine online, never had a problem. You can do so much, then save it and come back later to complete it. Then when its all completed, you then have to actually submit it to them. Even if you've filled in all the info, it only sits there until you submit it. This is so you can make last minute changes before submitting.
I always do a screen print as well, and you can also save a copy of the tax return to your computer.
If you have a problem, speak to them as I have always found them very accomodating.
One year I was late with mine as I'd had a break-in at my premises and got the £100 fine. I rang them and explained what had happened and gave them the crime ref number. They then waved the £100 fine.
