Our Navy, given its size would be lucky to be able to attack a small collection of canal barges

A sophisticated anti-aircraft ship is just what we need to combat Iraqi and Taleban insurgents, their air power is legendary.

Part of a fleet/task force. They'll be used as radar picket(sp) to screen our two new aircraft carriers.

...though what are we doing in other areas? Submarines and frigates? No point having clear skys if it hits a mine or gets torpedoed.

I think adequate body armour, weapons & working equipment for the men on the ground would be a better use of military spending right at this present moment in time.

I believe it can deal with both mines and Torpedoes.

£1bn? Bargain. That only bails out about 1/20th of a bank.

The Forces need better APCs, personal body armour and more reliable rifles not a ruddy great ship. What are we going to do, fire a missle from a ship at a flying taleban soldier?

Good point, but you still need a navel force to get the troops and supplies to where they're going. Lets face it we have a week navy at the moment, it needs all the kit it can get too, we are an island after all.

Sounds like quite a piece of kit. Must be pretty complicated, taking 3 years to bolt together after the launch.

We still have issues with our rifles? Thought we had got that sorted with the new version of the SA80! We don't need new ships if our guns don't work

Luminous - they were improved (SA80s) quite significantly but they still aren't too happy in sandy conditions.

Something like a Steyr Aug is much better and more robust.

Its all the population of this country seem to know how to do these days , negative, negative, negative....guess it comes with years of our wonderful media constantly showing the negative side of everything the country does.
Lots of negativity and paranoia in this country now, everything we do is wrong, we never win anything(of course we have to win everything, doing well at it just doesn't cut it) , frankly its depressing the hell out of me now.

Don't think this country knows how to be proud of itself anymore......hold on...now I'm being negative!!..**** me its contagious!

These ships are the dogs gonads and they're British!! be happy people and be fecking proud for once too!

I think the senior service would take offence if it was run by the army (although we would do a better job with it)

Due to the fact I have served in the forces, and been discharged due to injury on tour you would have thought that I would get that right

Well let's hope the Captain who ran his ship aground in NZ is not put in charge of it.

These things move, and pack a punch!

Skjold Class Missile Fast Patrol Boats - Naval Technology

These are similar to the Type 45:

Nansen Class Anti-Submarine Warfare Frigates - Naval Technology

Interesting naval tech out there now.

A mate of mine works for RR and does navy boat engines. They do some crazy stuff!
