Can anyone recommend to me an accessory thatll do the above? Ideally it needs to include a potentiometer as the car that I will use it on preceded OBD2 by fifteen years! I know that Blitz make a device that takes an input from the speed sensor and it extremely accurate (to within 1-2bhp on a 200bhp car, when its set up correctly), but I need something a little more old school (the most advanced connection will be through a cigar lighter)...

It was an iPod Touch advert that made me think about these. I havent seen anything like it for a good few years, because tapping into the OBD2 port is easier, but there used to be scores of products in the nineties. Id like to achieve this without spending any more money with Apple, if I can.

There used to be a company in Costock, Notts. that made them.
They used to advertise in the back of EVO mag.
IIRC they cost about £120 and plugged into the cig. lighter.
Can't remember the name but if you've got any old copies lying around...
Edit - remembered the name. RaceLogic.

I've got a Performance Box and it's cool as f***!
And those adverts you've seen in the back of Evo (and Autosport and Total Impreza and Porsche 911 World and Total Evo)...? The photos in them are mine
Saw 5th gear using a P Box the other week for 0-60s in a 911.
PBox is GPS based with a 10Hz engine and I've found it pretty good.
I tend to leave it running and then do what you need to do and then analyse on PC at home, much less distracting than foofing about in car.

I had a g tech pro rr. quite accurate, if you set it up properly.
It had quite a few things it could record. g force, gear shift times, breaking distance , 0-60, bhp,1/4 miles etc.
it also had a built in shift light that can come on at any rpm you choose.
was about £200 a year back, probably cheaper by now.

£200 when the £ was worth $2 and they retailed at $200 in the United States, so they should have been about £125. If they were available for a realistic price, rather than the usual £-for-$ rip off that we're used to, then Id have ordered one already...

you might get an older one for cheaper, just keep an eye out on ebay.

I just use a suction mount mobile phone holder from Halfords in my GTR. It took a few attempts to get it set up, I found that the torque reaction of dialling in the revs to launch was triggering the timer so had to fiddle with the settings.

Cheers Rev. I've got a suction mount on the windscreen but its one with the twisty arm which i'm sure will move under load and therefore affect the results. Has yours not got an arm attached to the mount?

It has the arm but seems pretty accurate. My car got dyno'd at 375bhp. The one half decent run I made with Dynolicious worked it out as 360bhp but I bogged the launch (hence half-decent). GTRs like a lot of revs at launch otherwise they bog down when the front wheels are brought into action as I found. You get a chirp from the rears then you fall off the boost as the power gets fed forward. Still did a 4.5 0-60. Once I get some time and find a better "private track" I should be able to get some better results. For what it costs, you can't knock it really.

As far as mounting your iPhone / iTouch G meter Brodit mounting kits are unbeatable. Generally consists of a custom made clip for your car which for example clips around the air vents, then you get a custom holder for the iPhone. Use Brodit Proclips for my satnav after finding the stick on ones to be a bit poo, it's rock solid
Get them from here: Brodit Proclip | UK | DSLDevelopments
Not cheap but once you've used them you'll never look at any other type of mount.

It should be interesting as we should be able to compare some of the data such as lateral G to the Motec data logging system fitted to the car.

I was thinking velcro originally as my case is damaged so need a new one meaning the existing one can have a great chunk of velcro stuck on it.
Don't know about industrial velcro though? I've only got the reels of stuff from Homebase. Plus i'm not sure how well it will stick to the dash of the scoob as it isn't smooth
