In nut shell, if you don't use the calories you take in your body will store it as fat.

If you use more calories than you eat you lose weight.

If you eat more calories than you use you gain weight.

Sugar = approx 16 calories per teaspoon.

After eating your body processes carbohydrates first, using insulin to transport it around to be used as energy. Any unused may be stored and converted to body fat. When insulin levels drop in the absence of further sugar your body should start using ketones to transport ingested fats and proteins around the body as energy, again storing any unused. However, the brain sees a drop in insulin levels as hunger, usually resulting in the further ingestion of food, more than likely containing further carbs and thus raising insulin levels again, preventing the use of ingested AND stored fats as energy. The traditional western diet of a combination of carbs, fats and proteins is a surefire way to gain weight. Reduce the carb intake so that insulin levels plateau and thus the brain doesn't see any drop-off and hunger diminishes, allowing ingested and stored fats and proteins to be burned, resulting in weight loss. This is the gospel according to Atkins

Why don't you eat a kilo of sugar a day and only that and see what happens?

Note: you'll get fat unless you run marathons

Too many calories in & not enough leaving makes you fat. Don't think it matters if it's sugar or not

For 5 months I ate full English brekkies, steak, pork chops, chicken and loads of meat, along with absolutely loads of non-starchy veg. I have no idea how many calories a day I ingested, but my diet contained loads of fat and protein. I lost almost six stone. Been back on the same system a week and already down 9lb. Just enjoyed an omelette for supper (bacon, mushroom and stilton) and looking forward to brekkie, and had a cream based korma for dinner. Works for me

^^ Meat is low calorie though isn't it hence eating meat till you're full generally means less calories than doing same with sweets, sticky buns, mega calorie pre packaged food etc. Atkins seems to work albeit with a few side effects

if you was eating double that before this 5 month period then i could understand the weight loss

I pretty much ate the same amounts as I do now, but used to snack between meals more. Biscuits are my vice, especially chocolate Hob ****. Much as I stated in my earlier post, I was eating fatty protein foods (meat) but at the same time as chips, rice, pasta, bread etc. Subsequently my body was producing large amounts of insulin to process the high carb intake, then my brain was telling me to eat again, or snack between meals as it thought I was hungry, even though there was a pile of fat and protein waiting to be used as energy. Now, instead of the chips, rice etc I have cauliflower, broccoli, asparagus or any non-sweet veg which grows above the ground. My insulin levels have plateau'd and I no longer feel hungry between meals. Hell, I no longer feel hungry after 12 hours without eating and have to remember that I must eat ! Today for instance I haven't yet eaten anything after cooking a mushroom cheese pot for supper last night.

I've only been back on the extreme part of the diet (iro 20g carbs a day) for a couple of weeks and am just going through the sugar withdrawal so feel a bit grotty. In a few more days I will feel just fine. The weight is already coming off though as I'm down 12lb.

Flattery will get you everywhere

Most of the pics that have been on here of me have been taken between the first time I did the diet and now. At my lightest I was 15st, but have allowed it to creep back slowly to nearly 18. At my heaviest I was 21st I'm hoping that by April I'll be back to around 15st. My doctor says that my ideal weight for my height is around 13st, but everyone I know agrees that I looked good at 15.

Isn't insulin the thing that controls blood sugar though? Hence the problem diabetics have.

Also, too much sugar can actually lead to diabetes. The cases of Type II (none genetic) diabetes are on the rise, thanks to poor diets.

The Atkins diet refers to it being beneficial for type 2 diabetes sufferers. I've not read that part of the book as it is (currently) irrelevant to me though.
