Healthy eating and shift work
Hi, so here's the deal;
I'm 6' 2" and a little over 17 stone. I work, mostly, 11 hours shifts, in a van. I want to lose weight, my fat gut, my love handles and generally be a bit fitter.
So, I need ideas for meals. At the moment I take salads for work, generally green leafy stuff, feta, cucumber and chopped frankfurters. Main meal...whatever is to hand, pizza, pasta takeaways etc!
The main meal is the one I think I need to work on. The big problem, besides a lack of imagination, is a lack of time with an 11 hour shift. Also, the 11 hours can be anywhere from 6am to 2am so the main meal could be Lunch or dinner...that said I get my rosters 6 months at a time so I know where I'm at all the time.
Any ideas?
Exercise ideas would be good too. Bare in mind when I'm not working I'll be cooking my tea or sleeping! I plan to walk or cycle where I can on my days off. :P
TIA

Hi Dan. My break can really be in the middle of nowhere, Yorkshire! Packed lunches are the answer really, obviously when I've been given my break I take it straight away and don't drive to shops (that'll mean nowt to folk who don't drive vans with letters on!)

I found loads of veggies with lunch helped to take the edge off wanting snacks and heavy meals at dinner. Also avoiding fruit juice and having fruit instead keeps energy and insulin levels steady. Not really sure how you can have a veggie lunch on the go though, also have a big lunch, as being hungry will make you fat.

If I have an early start I'll take a salad and have my main meal at home in the evening. If I'm on a late finish I'll have a main meal at home at lunchtime and take a salad for my evening meal. I do sometimes take apples to snack on. (and sometimes have LOTS of choccie...yeah I know!!!)
How does being hungry make you fat?

When you do not eat enough your body thinks there is no food around so takes to storing all the energy it can get. It also makes you crave the wrong foods. I had a little spurt of a health and fitness drive last year and spent every night looking at different info on eating healthy. I got bored after a 4-5 months but large meals with the right balance of veggies fish and meat etc works wonders.
It seems that its about getting a balance that makes your body want to lose the fat. There is also some research that says taste has an effect on weight loss.
SOme professor or other found that exactly the same diet combined with a spoon of bran oil three times a day made him loose weight. This was atributed to the taste of the oil encouraging the body to assume it was a lean period for food because of the bland taste and it was time to us up fat reserves.
With exercise less is more. HIIT training as reccomended on here is definately effective and in the gym go lift weights until you can't move but always leave those muscles 7 days to recover.

Seriously! A perfectly balanced , healthy, low fat fast food. Those sliced up gifaffe jobs are a different matter entirely, though.

Righto, ta!
I'm just having my brekkie now, sultana bran. Will be hitting the road at 6am. Due to how 'work' works, I'll get my break at about 10.15 - 11. So I'll be having my salad then...assuming I knock it up before going out...must get off here! Then it's to the pub tonight...will start proper tomorrow
